Getting rid of cockroaches is not an easy task once they are infested. Smashing a cockroach may not seem like a good - or humane - and perhaps you want to fix the problem without getting your hands dirty. Cockroach traps can be a great alternative to insecticide sprays and are less expensive than hiring a cockroach eradication service.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Trapping cockroaches with cloth tape

  1. Try making tape traps. The materials used in this method are quite simple: you only need bait to attract cockroaches and tape to keep them in the trap. This type of trap is difficult to move once set, but this is a simple trick, and you can achieve high results with minimal effort.
    • Buy a sticky trap if desired. You can find traps in gardening stores or ask an extermination service.

  2. Buy a roll of duct tape. Make sure the tape is new and sticky; otherwise, the cockroaches might struggle to escape. You can use other types of tape instead of tape, but remember that they should have good adhesion. Scotch tape or paper tape is not suitable; cockroach traps need to be able to hold the cockroaches until you can handle them.

  3. Choose a primer. Anything that smells sweet or greasy can help. People often use onions as bait, but you can use anything that smells good. A small freshly peeled banana peel, a piece of overripe fruit, or a piece of bread can all be used. If you find that cockroaches in your home particularly like a food, use that food as bait.
    • If you want to kill cockroaches on the spot, you can purchase a gel bait that contains active ingredients that are toxic to insects. However, these baits are not always attractive to cockroaches, so they may not be as effective as tape traps. Contact a garden store or pest control center to find bait.
    • Use only a small amount of bait. If you let the bait stick out of the edge of the tape, the cockroaches won't have an incentive to go in and get stuck. Cut onions, fruit or other foods into small pieces that will still attract cockroaches.

  4. Set the bait. Place fruit, onion, bread, etc. in the center of the tape. Remember to place the bait firmly so that it does not tip over.
  5. Trapping. Place tape in an area where you see a lot of cockroaches: in the kitchen, in a dark corner, or near a hole in the wall. Determine what to do with cockroaches in advance after you trap them; The cockroaches will be trapped in the tape, and you will have to find a way to handle them so they do not escape.
    • Try placing cockroach traps on high places, such as on top of a kitchen cabinet or refrigerator. Cockroaches like to crawl up high.

  6. Wait for the cockroaches to trap. Cockroaches like the dark and often scavenge for food at night. Leave the trap alone overnight and do not disturb it until morning. When you check the trap in the morning, you will see a lot of cockroaches in the trap. You can deal with cockroaches by humane killing or releasing them.
    • If you want to let go of the cockroaches, pick up the tape and take it outside. Take a minimum of 35 meters away from home, then shake the tape to let the cockroaches fall off and throw the tape away. Do not handle tape with bare hands, wear gloves or use the trash can. Another treatment is to use the box face down on the tape, then thread a piece of paper under the box to keep the cockroaches inside while you take them out.
    • If you want to kill cockroaches, simply throw out the tape that contains the cockroaches. Be sure to cover your trash can or tie the bag tightly when you put cockroaches in; otherwise, the cockroaches might crawl out and your efforts will be in vain!

Method 2 of 3: Trapping cockroaches with a jar

  1. Try a cockroach trap in a jar. This method is safe for children and pets, and is easier to move than tape. Look for a 1-liter jar with a very short neck, such as a mayonnaise or spaghetti sauce jar.
  2. Create a path for cockroaches to crawl into the jar. Wrap the tape over the entire outside of the jar (the sticky side is attached to the jar), to create friction for the cockroaches to climb onto the sides of the jar. You can also place the bottle next to a slope so that the cockroach can easily get inside.

  3. Lubricate the inside of the bottle. Apply a layer of Vaseline cream over the inner side of the jar, at least a 10 cm stretch down from the top of the bottle. This way, the cockroaches will not be able to climb out of the jar because there is no friction to cling to. You can mix Vaseline cream with bait to kill cockroaches when they eat. Remember that the gel primer dries easily, so a little Vaseline will help keep the bait moist while you wait for the cockroaches to trap.
  4. Place the bait in the trap. Put some food with strong smells on the bottom of the jar to attract cockroaches. A piece of banana peel or a ripe, fragrant fruit will work. Many people like to use onion slices. Remember that the bait must not be too big, otherwise the cockroaches can be used to crawl out of the jar!
    • Try pouring just enough beer or red wine into the jar to drown the cockroaches. Fruit juices, sodas and sugar drinks also work. These sweet-smelling drinks will attract cockroaches and keep them from escaping forever.
  5. Trapping. Keep the jars where cockroaches are infested, leaving some space around the sides of the jar so the cockroaches can crawl into the jar and get stuck.
    • Try placing the jars in enclosed places such as wall cabinets, garages, or enclosed corners. The sweet scent will attract hungry cockroaches to the trap.
  6. Empty the cockroach trap jar. Leave the bottle of the cockroach trap overnight or for a few days until you have caught a fair amount of cockroaches. You can pour boiling water into the jar to kill any surviving cockroaches, then pour it into the toilet bowl or into the compost bin.
    • Replace the trap to treat the cockroaches thoroughly. Reapply the Vaseline cream in the jar, replace the new bait and repeat the cockroach trap process if necessary.

Method 3 of 3: Trapping cockroaches in bottles

  1. Try a red wine bottle trap. First, look for a bottle of wine that is almost empty. The shape of the bottle is very important (the bottle should be tall, cylindrical, narrow neck, etc.), as this will prevent the cockroaches from crawling out of the jar. Any bottle that is tall and has a narrow neck will work. There should still be some wine left in the bottle, about a few spoons.
    • If it's a non-sweet wine, fill a bottle with ¼ teaspoon of sugar and shake well.
    • If you don't want to use alcohol, you can try a sugar-based juice with a piece of fruit. Use boiling water to cool to prevent mold before the solution takes effect.
  2. Brush the inside of the bottle with some cooking oil. Cooking oil will flow down and lubricate the bottle until the bottom of the bottle.
    • You can also use a bottle scrub brush or a long-rolled brush to sweep the Vaseline cream inside the bottle, just below the neck. So when the cockroaches fall into the bottle, they will not have the adhesion to climb upwards.

  3. Trapping. Place the bottle in a spot where you've ever seen cockroaches: near a compost pile or a dark corner in the kitchen. Set the trap for at least one night. It can take a few days for the solution to ferment enough to attract cockroaches.
    • Cockroaches will be attracted to the sweet smell of alcohol or beer. They will crawl over the top of the bottle, slip on top of the oil, fall to the bottom of the bottle, and cannot climb back up.
    • Consider creating a wine "path" on the wall from the bottom of the bottle up to the top. Cockroaches will be lured to crawl into the trap in the hope that there is even more attraction inside.

  4. Get rid of cockroaches. In the morning, when you check the trap and find cockroaches in the bottom of the bottle, carefully pour very hot water into the bottle to kill the cockroaches. Leave hot water in the bottle for 1-2 minutes to kill cockroaches, as cockroaches are famous for their longevity. Get rid of cockroaches by dumping them in the garden, into a compost pile or toilet.
    • If the one-off trap isn't enough to solve the problem, keep placing a new bottle to trap the cockroaches every few days. Gradually, the number of cockroaches will decrease and less cockroaches will fall into the trap.
    • Try using wine bottle, bottle or tape together with cockroach traps. Place different types of traps in different areas of your house and see which works best. Note that a trap can catch many cockroaches by being placed in the right place, not by the trap mechanism.

Advice

  • If you don't have onions, you can use peanut butter or anything with a sweet smell.
  • Once you trap cockroaches, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the cockroaches from the tape or throw the tape away.
  • Consider making your home less attractive to cockroaches. If the indoor environment is still conducive to cockroaches, then destroying the cockroaches will only create space for the cockroaches to quickly replace them.
  • Cockroaches are unlikely to die when sucked in by a vacuum cleaner - they will lay eggs in them and have more cockroaches in your home.

Warning

  • The adhesive tape may dry out.
  • Keep the tape away from children and pets.

What you need

  • Sticky adhesive tape
