In this article, we will show you how to open winmail.dat files. They are email attachments that are sent through the Microsoft Outlook client from computers. To view the contents of this file, use online services or mobile applications. Keep in mind that the contents of the winmail.dat file are always identical to the text of the letter, so you do not need to open this file if you can read the letter.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: On the computer

1. 1 Download the winmail.dat file. To do this, open the letter with this file, and then click the download button next to or in the preview window.
   • You may need to confirm the download first or select a folder to save the file to.
2. 2 Go to the service page to view the winmail.dat files. Go to https://www.winmaildat.com/ in your computer's web browser. This service converts the winmail.dat file into an RTF document that can be opened in Microsoft Word (or WordPad or TextEdit).
3. 3 Click on Overview. This button is at the top of the page. An Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window opens.
4. 4 Select a file. Navigate to the folder with the downloaded winmail.dat file, and then click on it.
5. 5 Click on Open. It's in the lower-right corner of the window. The winmail.dat file will be uploaded to the service page.
6. 6 Click on Start (To begin). This button is in the middle of the page. The process of converting the winmail.dat file to an RTF document starts.
7. 7 Click the link messagebody (text of the letter). You will find it at the top of the page. The RTF file is downloaded to your computer.
   • You may need to confirm the download first or select a folder to save the file to.
8. 8 Open the downloaded RTF document. Double click on the RTF file to open it in a text editor. Now look at the contents of the winmail.dat file.

Method 2 of 3: On iPhone

1. 1 Install the Winmaildat Opener app. This can be done in the App Store; this application opens winmail.dat files on iPhone.
   • Open the App Store .
   • Click "Search" in the lower right corner.
   • Click on the search bar at the top of the screen.
   • Enter winmaildat opener.
   • Click Find.
   • Click Download for Winmaildat Opener.
   • When prompted, enter your Apple ID, tap Touch ID, or use Face ID.
2. 2 Press the Home button. The App Store will be minimized and you will be returned to the home screen.
   • On iPhone X and later, press the side button.
3. 3 Start your mail application. Click on the mail application icon, which contains the letter with the winmail.dat file.
4. 4 Select an email with a file winmail.dat. To do this, tap the subject line.
5. 5 Please select attachment winmail.dat. Click on the attachment at the bottom of the email. An empty preview window will open.
   • Scroll down to find the attachment.
   • If the winmail.dat file opens in the Winmaildat Opener application, skip the next two steps.
6. 6 Tap the Share icon . You will find it in the upper right corner (and in some cases in the lower left corner). A menu will open.
7. 7 Scroll right and tap Copy to Winmaildat. It's on the right side of the top row of apps in the menu. The winmail.dat file will be sent to the Winmaildat Opener application and converted to an RTF file; The Winmaildat Opener application starts.
8. 8 Tap the name of the RTF file. You will find it at the top of the page. The RTF file opens and you can view the contents of the winmail.dat file.

Method 3 of 3: On Android

1. 1 Install the Winmail.dat Opener application. This can be done in the Play Store; this application opens winmail.dat files on Android device.
   • Open Play Store .
   • Click on the search bar.
   • Enter winmail.
   • Tap "Winmail.dat Opener" in the dropdown list.
   • Click Install.
2. 2 Press the Home button. It is located under the screen. The Play Store will be minimized and you will be returned to the home screen.
3. 3 Start your mail application. Click on the mail application icon, which contains the letter with the winmail.dat file.
4. 4 Select an email with a file winmail.dat. To do this, tap the subject line.
5. 5 Please select attachment winmail.dat. Click on the attachment at the bottom of the email. The attachment will open in the Winmail.dat Opener application.
6. 6 Tap the name of the RTF file. You will find it at the top of the page. The RTF file opens and you can view the contents of the winmail.dat file.

Tips

• If your email contains files other than winmail.dat, use the Winmaildat online service to convert these files to a readable format.

Warnings

• If you managed to read the letter, winmail.dat need not be opened. Please be aware that converting this file to RTF will not retain some of the message formatting.
