You can quickly add a friend to your WhatsApp contact list, provided they are in your phone's address book or contact list. If your friend is also a WhatsApp user, you will have the opportunity to chat and call each other through WhatsApp for free. Otherwise, send your friends a short message inviting them to join the WhatsApp community.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Adding Friends

  1. 1 Add your friend's phone number to your phone contacts. You can contact a person via WhatsApp only if you have his number in the contact list, and the contact himself has the WhatsApp application installed. The user cannot be added to the WhatsApp contact list by name, email address, username or any other method.
    • It is worth noting that you do not need to be in the contact list of the added user.
    • For instructions on how to add a contact on iPhone, see How to add a contact on iPhone.
    • For instructions on how to add a contact on your Android phone, see How to add an Android contact.
  2. 2 Add the country code for your foreign friends. If your friend has an international number, make sure the number in the address book is in international format (+ [country code] [phone number]). Erase all 0s in front of the international number.
    • To call a Ukrainian number, dial +38.
    • To call a German number, dial +49.
  3. 3 Give WhatsApp access to your contacts. If you refused a request to share your contacts while installing WhatsApp, you will have to do it manually so that WhatsApp can scan your contact list:
    • iPhone - open the Settings app on the desktop. Select "Privacy" and then "Contacts". Toggle the slider in the "WhatsApp" field to the "On" position.
    • Android - open the Settings app (only applicable for Android version 6.0+, as older versions do not support individual permissions). Open the "Applications" or "Application manager" section. Find WhatsApp in the list that appears. Click on the "Permissions" button and then toggle the slider in the "Contacts" field to the "On" position.
  4. 4 Make sure your friend has WhatsApp installed. Through WhatsApp, you can only communicate with those who have it installed. If your friends do not appear in the list, then either they do not have WhatsApp installed, or you entered their number incorrectly in the contact list.
  5. 5 Invite your friends to WhatsApp. If your friends don't use WhatsApp, send them invitations by email or SMS:
    • Click the Favorites (iPhone) or Contacts (Android) tab.
    • Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Invite Friends.
    • Click on the "Invite" button next to the contact to whom you want to send the invitation.
    • Choose how you want to send the invitation.Choose email, SMS or any other messaging method that is installed on your phone.

Part 2 of 2: Chatting with Friends

  1. 1 Click the Favorites (iPhone) or Contacts (Android) tab. All contacts with WhatsApp installed, as well as all those with whom you can communicate through it, will be displayed here.
  2. 2 Look for a friend in your contact list. If a large number of your acquaintances use WhatsApp, start a search for a contact by clicking on the corresponding field at the top of the screen. As you type your name, your friends list will be automatically filtered.
  3. 3 Select the friend you want to talk to. If your friends don't appear on the list, make sure you entered their phone number correctly and that WhatsApp is installed on their phone.
  4. 4 Click Call to dial your pen friend's number. This call will not count towards your phone's tariff plan. Cellular communication or Wi-Fi network, if available, will be responsible for data transfer.
