Once you have built a worm farm, it is very important to know how to feed the worms properly so that they develop and stay healthy. This article provides a summary of how to feed worms on a farm.
Steps
1 Find out what worms love. Just like any pet or pet, feeding always gets better if that's what the pet wants! The worms are really happy to consume the following:
- Most fruit and vegetable waste (see exclusions in next step).
- Waste from your juicer (not citrus fruits).
- Cardboard boxes - remember to soak them first and break them into small pieces).
- Paper, textiles, paper tickets, etc.
- Your Hair - Brush your comb weekly and give the worms your hair!
- Coffee grounds.
- Eggshell.
- Banana peel (I like it especially).
- Leaves.
- Most fruit and vegetable waste (see exclusions in next step).
2 Know what not feed your worms. There are some things your worms don't like or might even harm them. Do not feed the worms with the following foods:
- Any very acidic fruit - mostly tomatoes, any citrus fruit, or kiwi. Some tropical fruits can also be too acidic.
- Onion peel.
- Dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt, cream.
- Pasta.
- Bread, rolls, cakes.
- Meat fish.
- Spicy food.
3 Feed the worms only once a week. However, keep an eye on their consumption rate, this will affect how often you need to replenish their food supply.
- The amount of food you need may vary from season to season
Tips
- If you are composting, keep a separate container for the foods the worms love the most. Leave everything else in your general compost or bin if it can't be composted for worms.
- Don't feed on acidic foods like tomatoes.
