Your accent indicates your background. But it is very easy to change it. A person is never "attached" to their accent, which can be changed through practice or perhaps by moving to another place.

Steps

  1. 1 Move to the UK. When you live there, or are visiting for a while, it is not at all difficult to catch the peculiarities of the British accent. We in no way want to offend the American accent, but the British one sounds much more attractive. Moving there can be challenging, but you will learn a lot during your stay. You don't have to want to be British, you might just want to speak with the same accent. If you decide to move or just visit Britain, pick one place where you like the accent more and study it. It is very important.
  2. 2 If you can't go there, study accents in other ways.
  3. 3 Train daily or as often as possible. Write a list of words with prominent vowel sounds, such as "are," "water", or "telephone." In general, the British accent is considered to be more elegant because the vowel "aw" (A) is replaced by "ah" or "uh" etc. However, hack it on your nose, this is not a general rule for the whole of Britain. For example, a Cockney accent sounds completely different. Usually they omit the "h" sound in their speech. Also note the different sounding of simple words such as "of." Watch the movie "My Fair Lady" or the play "Pygmalion" to see more differences between British and Cockney accent.
  4. 4 Learn slang. In this case, the Cockney dialect is used, but this is not the only example, look for other words as well. Cockney rhythmic slang is used in many countries outside the UK. It is formed by searching for a word or name that is consonant with the original. The new word is placed in the sentence and the expression is used as a slang expression. For example: Lies = Porkies. Why? Because: lies = pies and pies = pork pies. Therefore, porkies = lies.
  5. 5 Try to not speak like an aristocrat. This is not generally accepted and sounds trite. There are many regions and places where emphasis prevails.
  6. 6 Pronounce words shorter and don't put too much effort into pronunciation. Most Britons do not speak like aristocrats, as this is already overly stereotyped, although Americans think differently (fact). In reality, the opposite is true.

Tips

  • Don't mix accents from different countries. Pick one and stick with it. For example, if you mix a Liverpool accent with an Essex accent, you sound like a fool.
  • Speak with a British accent ALL day. At first, you will constantly forget to speak with a British accent, but gradually it will become a habit and you will even stop thinking about it!
  • People might think you are weird. However, if you want to dive deeper into another culture, who cares about the opinions of others?
  • Watch "Harry Potter" and listen carefully to the peculiarities and specifics of each character's speech. Hagrid, for example, is a prominent representative of the dialects of the eastern part of the country.
  • It would be nice to use British slang in your speech and not use typical Yankee expressions. For example, the word soccer. Read "football", or even "footy." In England, "pal" or "friend" is changed to "mate".
  • Stick to only one dialect. If you mix them, it will sound strange. Plus, you can't replicate an accent more or less believably if you're constantly shifting to another.
  • In general, just listen to your British accent as often as possible to adapt your pronunciation.
  • Read books by British authors. If a person has lived in England for a long time, his letter will be filled with appropriate expressions. Even if you develop a convincing British accent, it won't work without using the right slang.
  • Try and don't give up!
  • Hear commercials featuring British actors and models such as Max Irons.
  • Also see: Skins. Doctor Who (British TV series)
  • Subscribe to the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation)
  • Surround yourself with all kinds of British accents!
  • A great way is to watch British films (the lower the budget of the film, the better) and choose the accent you like. Try to repeat what the actors say until you start to get it right. You can choose from “Kes” (Yorkshire), “Snatch” (all kinds of London speech), “Twin Town” (Welsh), “Anita and Me” (Midlands), “Trainspotting” (Edinburgh), or “Hot Fuzz ”(dialect of the eastern part of the country). Check out the list of UK films on Wikipedia, see where they were filmed and if there were local actors involved (Kes is a great example). Learn to identify actors who are not authentic or overreacting.
  • Check out “The Inbetweeners”. (London)
  • Take a very close look at Coronation Street. (Manchester)
  • Check out more of Monty Python's talks. (Cockney and many others)
  • Watch the movie "Bronson" with Tom Hardy.
  • Watch “The Mighty Boosh” (Mixed but mostly Cockney)
