The most common way to get redstone dust is by mining redstone ore. You can find ore 10 blocks (or layers) above the bedrock, or between the bedrock. This means that it can usually be found from blocks 5 through 12, and rarely above layer 16 or below layer 2. You will need an iron pickaxe to mine redstone ore.

Steps

Method 1 of 6: Extraction

1. 1 If you prefer to mine ore, dig a ladder into the bedrock.
   • Dig two blocks in front of you and one block below them. Jump down and repeat.
2. 2 Once you get to the bedrock, if you still haven't found the red stone, dig a larger room and hang torches.
   • 5 blocks wide, 5 blocks long and 3 blocks high is a good start for a mine.
3. 3 Select the middle block of each empty wall, and dig a 2 block high tunnel until you can no longer see.
4. 4 Hang a torch at the farthest end of this tunnel.
5. 5 Head back down the new tunnel to check if you find ore (redstone or otherwise) on the walls, ceiling, or floor.
6. 6 Starting in the large room, go 3 blocks into the smaller tunnel and select the wall.
   • You must skip 2 wall blocks, and must face the third.
7. 7 Push this wall down, and dig your way back through the 1 by 1 tunnel, as high as your head.
8. 8 Check the walls, ceiling and floor of the tunnel for ore. If you see it, dig and mine it.
9. 9 Turn to the opposite wall and repeat.
10. 10 Keep making small tunnels, skipping 2 blocks each time, until you return to the torch.
11. 11 Place the torch on the floor, remove the torch from the wall, and dig back until you no longer see.
12. 12 Repeat steps 7-13 until you find a redstone ore.
13. 13 Keep in mind that this is only one way to mine ore. Choose the style that suits you best.

Method 2 of 6: Caves

1. 1 Find a cave, preferably near sea level, that leads underground.
   • If it goes down sharply, you can dig a ladder around the edges of the hole to go down.
2. 2 Follow the cave as long as possible.
3. 3 If your cave is not deep, find another one.
4. 4 When you find lava or bedrock, you are at the correct level to start mining redstone ore.
5. 5 You can either start mining directly from the cave wall, or you can explore the cave tunnels that lead even lower to find a red stone in the ceiling, walls, or floor.

Method 3 of 6: Finding Redstone Dust Elsewhere

1. 1 Sometimes, redstone dust can be found outside caves and mines. It can be obtained by exchanging it with another item, it can be dropped from dead witches, or it can be used to trap jungle temples.

Method 4 of 6: Jungle Temples

Jungle Temples can only spawn in Jungle biomes when you have Natural Structures enabled.

1. 1 Find the jungle.
   • The jungle is characterized by its tall trees, vibrant green grass and vines.
2. 2 Find the Jungle Temple.
   • These are large buildings of cobblestones and cobblestones with moss.
3. 3 Enter the temple door and follow the stairs leading down.
4. 4 Follow the corridor that leads far from the levers.
5. 5 Walk down the corridor, keeping to the side so as not to be shot through by the dispenser.
   • Sometimes, the dispenser can be hidden in vines, so be careful!
6. 6 After you wrap around the first corner, you can start digging up the red stone that leads from the stretch line to the dispenser.
7. 7 Continue along the corridor towards the chest, again keeping to the wall.
8. 8 Next to the chest is another redstone trail that leads to the dispenser above the chest.
9. 9 Go back the same way you came, but head towards the levers instead of the stairs.
10. 10 You must pull the levers in the correct sequence to open a hole on the left side of the stairs leading to the upper level, through which you can go.
    • Another alternative is to knock the middle lever off the wall and dig the wall behind it.
11. 11 In this room, you can find several pieces of redstone, as well as a chest, red repeaters, and a sticky piston.
12. 12 There are 15 Redstone Dust Chunks in the Jungle Temple.

Method 5 of 6: Exchange

Occasionally, priests in villages will exhibit 2-4 pieces of redstone in exchange for an emerald. Emerald can only be found in Mountain biomes.

1. 1 Find a village.
2. 2 There should be a tall tower there, which is the best place to find a priest.
   • The priests wear lilac robes.
3. 3 Right click on the priest and see what he has traded.
4. 4 If he has a red stone, put an emerald in the exchange cage, and transfer the red stone to your inventory.

Method 6 of 6: From Witches

Witches are enemies that attack from a distance, and who only appear in swamp huts, swamp boim, and from which redstone powder falls.

   • They are characterized by their vines on trees, dark water, dark grass and water lilies.
2. 2 Find the swamp hut and the witch inside it.

Tips

• Not all jungles have a temple.
• The best way to kill a witch is to use a bow. The distance from which you can shoot the bow is greater than the distance from which the witch can shoot.
• As you descend into the cave, remember to leave torches and other markers so you can find your way back.
• Villages only spawn in flat biomes (plains, shrouds, or deserts).
• Make sure you dig at the top of the bedrock. If not, you will need to dig around the bedrock.
• If you have scissors, you can cut the jungle temple stretch without running it.
• By lighting up caves as you move through them, you increase your chances of finding ore in the ceiling, floor, and walls.
• The witch cannot attack while she is being healed, therefore, it is better to take the first shot at you.
