Ugg boots are made of sheepskin and wool. As these materials become soiled, boots tend to look squalid rather than elegant or fashionable. There are methods to keep your shoes from getting dirty, as well as ways to clean them if you ever need them. By combining cleaning and preventive care together, you can wear your Ugg boots for a long time.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Cleaning the Ugg

Brushing

  1. 1 Use a suede brush to brush the outside of your boots. This will remove large particles of dirt that may have adhered to the outside of the boots, soften the nap and prepare the boots for a comprehensive cleaning. You can find suede brushes at most shoe stores.

Sponge cleaning (wet)

  1. 1 Brush your boots as described in the previous section.
  2. 2 Wet the outside of your boots. You want to lightly dampen your boots, not wet them. This can be done by wiping the surface of the boots with a cotton cloth dampened with water and well wrung out. Make sure the entire surface of the boots is damp to help the cleaner absorb.
  3. 3 Squeeze a small amount of the cleaner onto a damp sponge. Ideally, you should use a Sheepskin Cleaner & Conditioner, as this product is designed specifically for cleaning Uggs. But you can also use any other suede cleaner that is sold in shoe stores for these purposes.
    • If you couldn't find any of these, you can make your own cleaner by mixing equal proportions of water and white vinegar. This tool is not approved by the "Ugg manufacturers", but their owners use it successfully.
  4. 4 Using a sponge, apply the cleaner to the surface of the boots. Start at the top and work your way down, paying particular attention to the dirty areas. The boots should be cleaned very carefully, as the pile is very delicate and too rough movements can damage it.
    • Don't miss a single spot, or your boots will leave streaks after drying.
    • As the sponge becomes dirty during cleaning, it should be rinsed to avoid spreading the dirt to other areas of the shoe.
  5. 5 Rinse your boots. After you have thoroughly cleaned the outside of your boots, rinse off the cleaning agent from them. You can do this by holding your boots under cold running water or with a wet rag.
    • You should spend as little time as possible on washing the Ugg under running water. Too much wetting of the boots can damage the skin.
  6. 6 Stuff your boots with newspaper or paper towels. Shoes can lose their shape when wet, so it is very important to fill them with newspapers or paper towels so that the boots take the correct shape when they dry. This will also help the boots dry naturally.
  7. 7 It takes 24 to 28 hours for Uggs to dry. It is very important to let the Uggs dry naturally away from sunlight or other heat sources. Too much heat will cause the boots to wrinkle and stretch, resulting in a deterioration in appearance.
    • You can speed up drying by adding some silica gel bags (which absorb moisture) inside each boot. You can also use a shoe dryer (which blows room temperature air) to finish off the drying process.
  8. 8 The final touches remain. On boots that are completely dry, you can use a suede brush to comb through the lint and remove any pellets. It is advisable to then spray on the surface with a protective suede spray, such as "dirt and water repellent spray for UGG", which will help keep your boots clean.
    • When applying the spray, you need to hold the bottle at a distance of 15 cm from the boots and spray the product until the entire surface of the Ugg is wet (but not soaked). Leave the boots to dry in a well-ventilated area for 24 hours. Brush your Uggs again before putting on.
    • If you don't have a “water repellent Ugg spray”, you can use any suede protective spray.

Machine wash (full immersion)

  1. 1 Please note that this method is not recommended by the manufacturers as it could damage the boots. However, this method is very simple for cleaning dirty boots, especially if they are already very old and you do not go beyond your own yard in them. Wash on the delicate cycle and be sure to protect your Uggs.
  2. 2 Place the UGG Boots in the pillowcase. Tie the pillowcase in a tight knot to keep the Uggs from falling out.
  3. 3 Place in the washing machine and set to wool. In this mode, washing will take place at an acceptable temperature. Add detergent for woollens and turn on the machine.
  4. 4 Take the Ugg boots out of the washing machine. Let them dry naturally in the open air using the instructions in (Sponge cleaning). Keep them away from heating appliances and direct sunlight. Do not use a dryer.
  5. 5 Use a suede brush to shape the shoe. Once dry, use a nubuck brush, soft cloth or suede brush to gently set the pile. This will also help remove excess fluff that may have come off during drying.

Cleaning copyright UGG

  1. 1 Be very careful when cleaning other types of Ugg boots. The instructions described earlier only apply to the classic sheepskin Ugg boots. Ugg boots with metal inserts, ornaments, mosaics, embroidery, crocodile, colorful, knitted or special suede boots cannot be cleaned with detergents.
  2. 2 Such Uggs need to be cleaned only by gently wiping them in one direction. Use a soft cotton cloth slightly dampened with water.
  3. 3 Add a protective agent if necessary. These types of Uggs can be sprayed with a protective spray to prevent stains. All other products can damage the boots.

Method 2 of 3: Removing specific stains

Removing oil and grease stains

  1. 1 Chalk is used to remove oil or grease from the surface of the boots. If oil or grease drops on your Uggs, it is important to remove them as soon as possible and put the boots away from heat sources, otherwise the grease can be deeply absorbed into the fabric. Take a piece of chalk (white chalk, cornstarch, or talcum powder) and paint over the stain with it. Rub the chalk gently into the stain.
    • Leave the boots like this overnight to allow the chalk to absorb the oil and grease.
    • Shake off the chalk in the morning and the stain should disappear. After that, you can clean the boots in the usual way.

Removing dirt and salt stains

  1. 1 Use an eraser to remove dirt and salt stains. If dirt or salt stains get on your boots, you will first need to brush the surface with a brush to remove large particles of dirt. Then, using the eraser (found on the back of the pencil), gently erase the stain.
    • Moisten the stain with a little water and rub it in a circular motion with a damp sponge and a little suede cleaner.
    • Remove the cleaner with a damp cloth and let the boots dry naturally.

Removing water stains

  1. 1 Remove water stains. With one clever trick, you can easily remove water stains - just fold the boot so that the clean part of the suede touches the water stain area, then gently rub the suede surfaces together. After that, the stain should disappear.

Removing dirt from fur trim

  1. 1 Remove the debris from the fur trim by combing. You can clean the fur trim with a wide-toothed comb by simply turning the boot shaft up and combing out any debris stuck there. If you turn the boot over with the sole of the top, then any debris during cleaning is guaranteed to fall out, and not get inside the boot.

Eliminate odors

  1. 1 Remove odors with baking soda. The inside of Uggs, especially if they are made of cheap material, can cause an unpleasant odor due to the constant sweating of the feet. You can eliminate this smell by sprinkling a tablespoon of baking soda in each boot. Cover the shaft of the boot with your hand and shake it well to distribute the baking soda all over the inside of the boot.
    • Leave the boots overnight, then flip the top over with the sole and shake out all the baking soda.
    • If you wish, you can mix two drops of your favorite essential oil with baking soda to add a pleasant scent to your boots.

Method 3 of 3: Do's and Don'ts

  1. 1 Ugg boots should not be worn too often. This will help prevent frequent contamination. Any reason your Uggs may get wet, such as puddles and streams of water, should be avoided. It is also worth refusing to wear Uggs in places where their soft leather surface may be scratched, for example, on forest paths.
  2. 2 Clean your Ugg boots by hand. Please note that the manufacturer does not recommend washing Uggs in a washing machine, drying in a dryer or even dry cleaning, since all these procedures are considered very rude. There is a risk of irreparable damage to the boots when using these cleaning techniques. It is best to only clean your Uggs by hand using the wet cleaning method described above (However, you can wash your old Uggs in the washing machine if you want to make things easier for yourself, but you choose this method at your own risk.)
  3. 3 Buy a Uggs grooming kit. To keep your Uggs intact, you should purchase a set of care for them, preferably recommended by the manufacturer. This set contains everything you need, including a sheepskin cleaner, protective spray, air freshener, a brush and an eraser to remove stains. You can also purchase suede care products at a branded shoe store.
  4. 4 Carry out a paint fastness test. Use a white towel soaked in water to do this. If the pigment passes too lightly from the Ugg on the towel, you should understand that the paint will "come off" during any shoe cleaning, and each time your boots will look paler.
  5. 5 Never dry your Uggs with heating appliances. You can dry your ugg boots on the stand, turning them upside down, at room temperature, away from heat sources. Do not place your Uggs next to an open fire or heater, or place them on a windowsill to dry. In the absence of a special support, simply fill the boots with newspapers or paper towels to maintain the shape of the shoe. Leave them to dry for at least 24 hours.

Tips

  • To speed up the drying process of the Uggs, you should fill them with newspapers. However, it is best to buy clean newsprint from a specialty store to prevent ink from shifting from newspaper to fabric.
  • There are products specifically designed to clean and deodorize Ugg. Follow the directions on the label if you prefer one of these. The UGG brand offers a variety of cleaners and conditioners.
  • You can use fine sandpaper or a nail file to remove stubborn stains.
  • Cut your toenails, especially if you are not wearing socks, as there is the potential for damage to the inner tissue of the Ugg.

Warnings

  • Do not store your boots until they are completely dry. This leads to the growth of mold.
  • Never use a hair dryer or tumble dryer to dry your Ugg.
