Whether for a morning run, or for exercising in the gym, or just walking around town, your athletic shoes are very comfortable, but not cheap, and eat up a significant chunk of your budget. But if you take good care of it and clean it properly, it will last you long enough, keeping the money invested in it.

Steps

  1. 1 Fill a sink (or basin) with warm water. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid or liquid, natural olive soap, or a sports shoe cleaner.
  2. 2 Pull out the laces and insoles. You wash them separately.
  3. 3 Dip a soft bristled brush in soapy water, then gently scrub your athletic shoes, both outside and inside. Use a white nylon scourer to scrub the stains on your shoes. Use an old toothbrush to clean hard-to-reach areas such as around the tongue and others.
  4. 4 Rinse your athletic shoes thoroughly with warm water. Shake it to remove excess water, and stuff the inside of the shoes with dry rags or paper towels. Do not stuff your shoes with newspapers, otherwise newspaper drawings will be printed on the shoes. Let your shoes dry. Change rags or paper towels from time to time to speed up the drying process. Athletic shoes may take an entire day or more to dry completely.
  5. 5 Wash the laces in soapy water, rinse and hang to dry. Or, tuck the laces in a pillowcase so they don't get stuck or tangled with the laundry, and machine wash. If your laces are badly worn out, buy a new pair.
  6. 6 Clean the insoles with a sponge and soapy water. Blot with a dry towel, leave to air dry. If the insoles smell unpleasant, sprinkle them with baking soda or special shoe polish to neutralize odors and bacteria.
  7. 7 Insert clean laces and insoles into your athletic shoes, which should be completely dry.
  8. 8 Ready.

Tips

  • To speed up the process of the lugs on your shoes, place them near a warm fan. Do not place too close, the hot air will ruin the shoes, melt the sole. It is preferable to dry your sports shoes in the sun and in the fresh air.
  • Sports shoe silicone spray will extend the life of your nylon sneakers. The spray will repel dirt and make your shoes look cleaner.
  • Refurbish faded or old athletic shoes with an appropriate shoe polish.
