Hipsters are those who delight in clothing, food and activities that are not considered popular in society. If you also want to immerse yourself in the lifestyle of independent music labels, vintage clothing and hand-made coffee, then read on.

Steps

Part 1 of 5: Fashion

  1. 1 Dress like a hipster. Fashion is just as important as your taste in music. Many hipsters buy clothes from old (vintage) stores, but this is not a prerequisite for putting together a hipster's wardrobe.
    • Do not buy the product in the stores of the manufacturer itself, because this is consumerism. Instead, accordingly, buy clothes from independent retailers, as hipsters consider it cool. Let's say you try shopping at your local clothing store.
  2. 2 Skinny jeans. Classic skinny jeans form the basis of a hipster look for both men and women. Hipster men try to be as slim as women hipsters.
    • Note that guys wear tight jeans even more often than girls who prefer leggings, jeggings, and treggings.
    • In addition, women also wear high-waisted jeans (called “mom's jeans”).
  3. 3 Glasses. Hipsters prefer “ironic” glasses, such as Shutter Shades, glasses with large plastic frames, Buddy Holly glasses, nerd glasses, and if finances allow, then real Ray Ban glasses of all colors of the rainbow.
    • Some hipsters wear glasses even with 100% vision. In this case, you need to get rid of the lenses or insert simple glasses.
  4. 4 Ironic tops. Hipster-friendly tops: ironic tees, plaid and cowboy shirts, any plaid, checkerboard and vintage floral tops.
    • Many hipsters decorate T-shirts with appliqués, images of animals or forests, heroes of children's programs and ironic statements or even book covers.
    • Hoodies can also be worn.
  5. 5 Vintage dresses. Women can wear vintage dresses, preferably floral or lace. Granny's wardrobe can be a good source of hipster clothing, but you need to know how to alter and customize the dress to suit you.
  6. 6 Suitable footwear. Hipster shoes include cowboy boots, Converse sneakers and flat shoes.
    • Converse sneakers are no longer versatile. They look great, you can wear them almost everywhere, but alas and ah, they are already worn by everyone, so it is better to get some other vintage shoes, for example, Doc Martens.
    • If you prefer sneakers, try the classic Reeboks.
    • Heels are not the most popular type of shoes for hipster girls, however, feel free to wear them - especially if the heel is at least 12 centimeters. Cute sandals, sneakers, boots, boots, and grandma's boots are not only practical, but show that you've worked on your look, even if you've spent ages finding the right pair of shoes.
  7. 7 Accessories. There is a wide selection of accessories, including wide floral hair bands, neon nail polish, hairpins, brightly colored belts, necklaces, colorful patterned leggings, and more.
    • Don't forget about ear tunnels, piercings and accidental scars supposedly acquired during carpentry.
    • Matching ironic accessories are a must. For example, things that kids take to school (an animal lunch box).
    • The mainstay of the hipster look is also a messenger bag (not a backpack), preferably something from Freitag that can hold your MacBook, iPhone, and vinyl records (not CDs) of your favorite band.
  8. 8 Inappropriate clothing and layers. Dressing in layers and wearing mismatched clothing is very hipster. To create the "I don't care" look will take some practice.
    • Remember, a hipster outfit doesn't need to be tweaked; if you decide to go to the beach, wear the same clothes and accessories that you wear around town.

Part 2 of 5: Health

  1. 1 Ignore comments about poor hygiene. Some people just don't know the difference between hipsters and hippies, which is why they believe that hipsters also disdain soap and hot water. Of course, this is a delusion. Even if some hipsters, for example, do not use shampoo in principle (which does not prevent them from monitoring their own cleanliness), the overwhelming majority of hipsters do not just maintain hygiene, but also do it with the help of environmentally friendly soap!
    • Hipsters regularly shower and brush their teeth, but they are not interested in spending money on hairdressing salons, spa salons, pedicures, manicures and excessive makeup, as this is a sign of consumerism, reverence for the cult of beauty ideals.
    • It can be argued that hipsters do not value their appearance, since they consider their personality to be their greatest value. From the point of view of self-esteem, this is an objectively sound and reasonable approach to business.
  2. 2 Give your hair a messy look. Suitable hairstyles: disheveled, "just out of bed" hair, long and unstyled hair, and hair that cannot be styled.
    • Inappropriate hairstyles are part of hipster culture.
    • Some are generally tolerant of dirty hair. However, it is best to give them an unkempt and tousled look.
    • Some hipsters dye their hair to show it.
  3. 3 Get a vegetable garden and become a vegetarian. Try to use compost. If there is no way for you to do this (even on a balcony or windowsill), then buy products from the market. Meat is not very popular in hipster culture, which is why many are vegetarians or vegans. If you do eat meat, you must justify your choice as the cynical transcendence of vegetarians' futile attempts to save the world - your sense of irony already considers this movement outdated.
    • Hipster favorites include fruit, coffee, Asian food, and more.
    • You can't go wrong with purchasing lunch from an organic food store.
    • Technically, hipsters are foodies and love to cook gourmet meals. If you don't know how to cook, get some good cookbooks today.

Part 3 of 5: Lifestyle

  1. 1 Update old. It's a mixture of frugality, respect for the old, and a desire to show that you don't care about the new. It's not easy, as new Apple products and new clothes are also part of the hipster culture. However, deep down, we are all contradictory, and it is necessary to understand the integrity of these contradictions that shape the personality of a hipster, and the sooner the better.
    • Old things associated with hipster culture include Parliament cigarettes (as well as disregard for no smoking laws), Pabst beer, grandparents clothes (or finds from thrift stores), fixed-gear bicycles (which even nightclubs), analog cameras, reuse and recycle just about anything (which requires ingenuity, common sense, and a fun attitude).
  2. 2 Give up blind consumerism. Hipster shopping should help small retailers, the environment, and artisans.
  3. 3 Remember, most hipsters fall into a fairly well-defined age group. The age of hipsters ranges from adolescence to 30s. All of this is, in fact, part of today's extended adolescence, consisting of existential fear, the search for meaning and inner goals.
    • Naturally, this does not mean that you cannot be a hipster at an older age, but the fact that as you get older you are less anxious and less frustrated with the world order means that you: a) are not so preoccupied with hanging labels, b) have lost the need to be part of a subculture and / or c) less evil than they were before. Perhaps you are also trying to cope with the problems of your own adolescents, that is, you do not need to add new problems to yourself.
  4. 4 Visit the places where hipsters hang out. They prefer urban landscapes and, thanks to the Internet, keep good communication with each other. In the US, you can find hipsters in large urban centers where "anything is allowed." Independent art galleries, cinemas and concerts are also popular.
    • New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, and especially Brooklyn and the NYC suburb of Williamsburg (known as the unofficial capital of the hipster world).
    • Glasslands? Drunk? Exactly what is needed!
    • Los Angeles is acceptable too, but be careful not to immerse yourself in California culture.
    • If big cities aren't your thing, look for a college campus. In some states, the campus may be the only liberal part of the state, such as Austin in Texas or Lawrence in Kansas.
    • In the UK, London is the hipster destination, Montreal in Canada and Melbourne in Australia.
    • You don't have to force yourself to live or come to those cities just to become a hipster. In particular, it is expensive (especially when you live on the other side of the world). You can just as well be a hipster at home. By the way, the less you know about hipster culture, the better - there is less criticism and discrimination against you. Remember, the Internet will always be your best friend.
  5. 5 Education. Aim for tertiary education as hipsters are well educated, especially in fields such as humanities, visual arts, math, and science.
    • Read more, even if it means sitting in a bookstore, not buying any books, but absorbing information. Strive to get a higher quality education than is available at your school.
    • Visiting libraries (especially small, regional libraries) is quite a worthy option, since it is free, and books can always be returned back. In addition, in libraries it is quite normal to treat those who sit there for a long time with a book.
    • Many hipsters associate their careers with music, art or fashion. These areas are not a prime destination for hipsters, but a natural outlet for their creative energy.
    • Education helps hipsters to be dismissive of the world around them. They know that this is noise about nothing, and history repeats itself.
  6. 6 Be the first. Hipsters anticipate the value of something before it becomes trendy or popular. A lot of bands only became popular after hipsters started attending their performances. Hipsters also served as the beginning of many trends in fashion, which were then taken notice of by the major fashion houses. Many technical innovations were initially tried out by hipsters, and only later gained popularity.
    • The irony of being a hipster is that when something becomes trendy or popular, you have to switch to something new and unrecognized. This is the spirit of independence; you are paving the way for others and must be in constant motion.
    • If you are really good at something, for example, mathematics, physics, medicine, psychology, political analysis, ecology, then there is every chance that one day you will make discoveries that other outstanding minds of humanity are still, as they say, many light years away. Deep down, you know that you are comprehending something really meaningful, but others are not sure about this, since this is the "great unknown". Do not worry about this, do not give up on your own, and one day the day will come when other people will comprehend your discoveries.
  7. 7 Don't identify with others. One of the keys to being a hipster is independence. There is no need to go around and loudly declare that you are true to one or another ideals. Why? This behavior will lead you to the camp of those people who are very fond of sticking labels - do you need it?
    • The moment when you feel too obviously hipster is also a moment of stagnation and suppression of your personality by the status quo. This is why most hipsters will, if possible, give up their status.
    • To protect themselves from ridicule, many hipsters have taken their irony to the next level and ridicule themselves (for example, wearing a T-shirt that says "I hate hipsters"), thus giving no reason to ridicule other people.
  8. 8 Keep your finger on the pulse of the events of the hipster world. When notes about a new strange group appear, you should be aware of it, preferably before any publications appear. Check sites that post such information, but try not to let others think that you check them every 5 seconds.
    • If any new and very underground bands appear on their respective sites, you should know about it.
    • Let's say check out Brooklyn Vegan (even if you don't live in Brooklyn), Stereogum, Gorilla vs. Bear and Hype Machine as often as possible, but as we said, try not to be noticed by others.

Part 4 of 5: Independent entertainment

  1. 1 Read hipster classics. It is important that you read, as it connects you with other hipsters, informs you about cultural issues, and keeps you informed. There are tons of books out there, so separate the wheat from the chaff and start with the essentials. Here's what to read:
    • Hipster magazines like Vice, Another Magazine and Wallpaper... Foreign magazines are good too.
    • Great books and poetry by authors such as Jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsburg and Norman Mailer. Any great books you want. Visit the political science, anthropology, and sociology sections of bookstores often.
    • Blogs of other hipsters. Perhaps you have enough inspiration to write your own blog.
  2. 2 Watch hipster movies. Watch independent and foreign films and attend independent theatrical productions such as The Ann Liv Young Show. Watch films by Wes Anderson, Hal Hartley and Jim Jarmusch.
  3. 3 Listen to new and independent music. Independent music is a huge part of being a hipster. The list of independent music you listen to should be endlessly updated, especially in the genres of new rave, minimalist techno, independent rap, punk rock and others. Remember, good bands aren't necessarily famous. Browse and listen to amateur recordings, perhaps you will find something that will hook you.
    • but note hipster artists like Lana Del Ray, Grizzly Bear, Marina & The Diamonds, Pink Floyd, Stray Kites, The Xx, Nirvana, La Roux, M83, Neon Indian, Neon Neon, Margot & The Nuclear So and Sos, and also King Khan and the Shrines
    • Music blogs like Gorilla vs. Bear, Indiehere, / mu / and Stereogum can help you with your music choices. It's also helpful to meet people who are already listening to this kind of music.
    • Perhaps the most popular hipster music site is pitchforkmedia.com. If a group has a high rating on this site, then it is hipster.
    • A good way to tell hipster music apart from the rest is to ask your non-hipster friends about the band. If they have never heard of this group, then you are on the right track.
    • Listen to the music of bands from all over the world. Remember - the most popular songs and tracks of the decade were recorded in America, Britain and South Korea.

Part 5 of 5: Social life

  1. 1 Use social media. Hipsters like to use Blogspot, Tumblr or Wordpress, and use Holga cameras to shoot processed and dreamy photos in the field, by the ocean, in the woods, or in their hipster room. Social media will help you discover a lot of new and amazing things, and long before it becomes mainstream.
  2. 2 Go on dates with other hipsters. The reason why it is necessary to meet with your own kind is because it is much easier to reach an understanding on a variety of issues. A muscular guy or a tanned blonde is unlikely to suit you.
  3. 3 Dance. If you want to see a hipster during a concert, turn around and see them standing behind and discussing Stella or Pabst Blue Ribbon. Sometimes, if the music is right, you can even see them dance.
    • During the dance, the hipster practically does not move the hips, but actively uses the upper body and arms. Move your head back and forth, but only if you are not easily humiliated (if you are a real hipster, then you don't care).
    • Hipsters rarely dance at concerts, preferring dance parties where they can dance to their favorite hipster music.
  4. 4 Jargon and position. While there are many variations, and part of hipster culture is constant renewal, there are some things to know:
    • Remember to use the most famous hipster expression: "I loved them even before they were popular." Another good phrase, especially given recent events, is something like: "I donated to rebuild Haiti even before the disaster!"
    • Throw in names. Talk about groups you don't understand that you like but haven't heard of. If your friends talk about a band you don't know, say that you heard about it, but did not listen. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, search for information about this group. This will add points to you.
    • Insult groups. If you like everything, you will look like a fan. Give the impression that you're too cool and elitist for a lot of bands.
    • If you want to sound even more educated and elitist, use the phrase: "I liked their first album, but after that I never listened to them again."
    • Use fictitious words as often as possible. Or use real words whose meanings no one knows, for example, phantasmagoria, expropriation, reverb, exaltation, etc.
  5. 5 Hone your humor. Hipsters are famous for their irony and sarcasm. When asked about something, do not answer directly, instead answer vaguely, ask a counter question, or just be sarcastic.
    • Do not forget to smile and make it clear that you are not joking, as not everyone understands sarcasm.
    • For example, when, while watching a movie, a person sitting next to you says to you: "My God, it was so great! Did you see it?", Dryly answer: "No, I paid 300 rubles to look at the ceiling."
    • Watch British comedies. They serve as good role models.
    • Treat everything, including yourself, with a pinch of humor. Hipsters are often parodied, so it's helpful to know how to laugh at ridicule.
  6. 6 Be prepared for criticism. Hipsterism is often parodied or ridiculed because hipsters annoy some people. You will have to get used to being contemptuous and work out the most appropriate response forms for you.
    • You will often be told that your subculture is much worse than the one to which the interlocutor belongs.
    • Given that hipsters are proponents of progressive politics, you may find yourself contemptuous of conservatives, hence it is better to consider your responses to any standard ridicule.
    • As for the people who scoff at your fashion sense, remind these trendy lovers that their worn out and ripped jeans are made through the use of low-paid child labor ... but if they support it, then of course for God's sake. If you are rightly hinted that Apple's equipment is assembled in a neighboring factory by almost the same children, then try to change the topic of the conversation.
    • Determine the nature of the problem. Understand that many who make fun of you may be unsure of their position in society and have confused ideas about what culture is or how to match cultural variation to their own lifestyle and preferences. Showing compassion for the most aggressive of the lost souls can take a long time, but, as you can imagine, they do not attack you personally, but express their complete confusion and inability to think through all the questions in detail. This does not mean that you should respect or love such people, but this awareness will help you achieve harmony in your own inner world.
    • Nerds have a weird relationship with hipsters. Some botanists, even if their point of view is not common, recognize the similarity of the two cultures.

Tips

  • Taking care of everything will make you look more mysterious.
  • Don't wear crocs.
  • Buy the latest iPhone.
  • Coffee (preferably one bought in a small off-chain store) is one of the staples of a hipster's diet.
  • Lush shops, of course, are relatively popular, but they sell just wonderful natural handmade soap. The main thing is not to buy absolutely mainstream goods there.

Warnings

  • The goal of a hipster is to look natural, although, in fact, a lot of effort is put into the image. Come to terms with this funny paradox.
  • Don't take this article too seriously. These are just general tips that you are free to use as you wish. Hipsters pride themselves on their independence from the mainstream.
  • Sometimes you can be annoyed that people don't understand your admiration for certain music, fashion, etc. Don't even try to convince them. You can never see, hear or feel certain things the way they do, simply because we are all different.
  • Don't think you can instantly become a hipster. Becoming a hipster is a process and there is no need to rush here.
  • Don't take yourself too seriously.
  • Negativity can be a component of hipster culture as a countermeasure to the ridiculously positive, motivational attitudes of modern business and consumerism. Negativity is not a response, but a reaction. Try to find balance and peace in your life instead of seeing only doom and darkness around. Yes, there are many problems in society, but negativity will not solve them, whereas a realistic and pragmatic approach to things can make the world a little better. Remember that every generation thinks that things used to be or could have been better. We are constrained by time frames and our own bodies, so it is necessary to realize our limitations and do everything we can. Constant deconstruction and criticism of society can paralyze our way of life, and everyday complaints become a way of acting, but changing the status quo is not the goal.
