  • Oil for each small position. You should remove the small parts of the machine to lubricate it. See the drawings in the manual to understand the function and name of each part.
  • Do not apply oil to the needle, bobbin, presser foot or the throat plate as this will contaminate the fabric. You also use compressed air to clean the boat.
  • Clean under the throat plate. You will need to remove the screws on the throat plate. After removing the throat plate, you will see dust inside. Use compressed air to spray the area. Clean the other parts according to the instructions in the sewing machine manual.

Part 3 of 3: Apply oil to the sewing machine

  1. Put oil on the sewing machine components drop by drop. You only need to use a small amount of oil. The instruction manual will tell you where to put oil. The amount of oil needed is only a few drops.
    • Generally, you will put a few drops of oil on the boat housing.
    • Most sewing machines require lubrication at the bobbin case (the rotating part inside the bobbin case). Usually, you have to put oil on the serrated bridge. It was a silver ring that contained a dock. The sewing machine will work better and quieter if you put oil in here because the two parts are rubbing together.
    • You must also put a drop of oil on the outer ring of the housing. This is the place to slide along the serrated bridge.

  2. Wipe off excess oil. Avoid getting oil on any part of the machine that could come into contact with the fabric. However, if you see oil on the presser foot or throat plate, on the needle or bobbin, wipe it off with a clean cloth. Otherwise, the oil may stick to the fabric and thread.
    • If too much oil is dripped, run the machine through a muslin cloth, and then wipe the outside of the machine. Use a damp cloth moistened with soapy water. Leave the towel for a while to absorb the oil. Repeat as needed. You may need to do this a few times over the next several days so that no excess oil is left on the machine.
    • Check the sewing machine. Before starting a new sewing project, you should sew a few stitches on the draft to see if there is excess oil. Replace the throat plate in its original position.
  3. Oil the Singer sewing machine. You will first remove the throat plate. Turn the handwheel towards you so that the needle is fully pulled up, then open the front cover. Use the screwdriver supplied with the sewing machine to open the screws on the throat plate.
    • Clean the donkey table. Remove the bobbin and use the brush to clean the area. Remove the boat and pull the arms that hold the hook outwards. Remove the hook and hook cover, then wipe it off with a soft cloth.
    • Apply 1-2 drops of lubricating oil to the locations according to the instruction manual. Turn the handwheel until the serrated bridge is on the left side. Reattach the hook. Replace the hook cover, and pull the arms holding the hook back in place. Reassemble boat, bobbin, and throat plate.

Advice

  • A vacuum cleaner with a small suction nozzle can be used to clean lint.
  • You should not use your mouth to blow lint out of the machine because the breath is wet.
  • Shine your flashlight in places where you cannot see it clearly.
