A shower drain can become clogged with minerals from hard water, hair and soap. The methods below can all help you unclog a shower drain. If the first method doesn't work, try one of the other techniques.

To step

Method 1 of 5: Small blockages

  1. After showering, wait a few minutes to allow the water to drain slowly. This job will be easier to do when there is no more water in the drain.
  2. Grab a screwdriver. Remove the plug from the drain using the screwdriver.
    • If you have a built-in drain plug, pull it up and locate the screw that secures it to the shower drain. Loosen the screw and the top part of the drain plug.
  3. Use a flashlight to look down the drain. Most blockages are caused by hair. If the hair is close to the surface, pull it out with your fingers.
    • If the blockage is caused by a larger object stuck in the drain, it may be better to call a sewer cleaner. You may not be able to remove solid objects with a homemade or purchased sewer spring.

Method 2 of 5: Using iron wire

  1. Find an iron clothes hanger. Bend the clothes hanger so that you have a long and straight piece of sturdy iron wire.
  2. Use pliers to bend the end of the wire. This will allow you to pull hair out of the drain and this will be easier if there is a very small hook on the end.
  3. Hold a flashlight with one hand. With your other hand, insert the wire into the drain and try to pull out large clumps of hair.
  4. Hook the thread into the hair and pull it up. If the clump of hair is dense enough to hold back water, you will be able to pull the clump out of the drain as a whole.
  5. Repeat the process several times until you stop pulling hair up the drain. Pour some water down the drain to see if the water drains better.

Method 3 of 5: Unblocker (plopper)

  1. Make sure the outside of the shower drain is wet. If the shower drain is not completely wet, pour some water into the bath or shower tray.
  2. Press an unblocker (plopper) onto the drain. After a few pumping movements, the plunger should have absorbed.
  3. Make 5 to 10 pump strokes with the stem.
  4. Pull the plunger off the drain with a quick movement. Look down the drain with your flashlight to see if there are any lumps or other debris that you can remove with the wire.
  5. Run water down the drain to see if the clog has loosened and broken into smaller pieces.

Method 4 of 5: Sewer spring

  1. Buy a sewer ferry from the local hardware store.
  2. Place or place the sewage spring at the opening of the shower drain.
  3. Put the sewer spring down the drain. Push the sewer spring further and further into the drain and stop when you feel resistance. You found the blockage.
  4. Turn the crank of the sewer spring around clockwise.
  5. Keep turning the crank as you pull the sewer spring out of the drain. The cause of your blockage should be pulled up at the end of the sewer spring.

Method 5 of 5: Baking soda solution

  1. Try to clear the blockage with a homemade natural drain cleaner before using more aggressive chemical drain cleaners. Keep in mind that most clogs in a shower drain are caused by clumps of hair, which you can loosen and pull up.
  2. Wait for the water to flush down the drain.
  3. Pour 3/4 cup (290 grams) of baking soda down the drain.
  4. Pour 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) of distilled white vinegar down the drain.
  5. Seal the drain with a drain plug while the chemical reaction takes place. Allow the mixture to work in the blockage for 30 minutes.
  6. Boil water in the kettle. Use about 2 to 4 cups (0.5 to 1 liter) of water.
  7. Remove the drain plug. Pour the entire contents of the kettle down the drain. The water should clear the blockage.
  8. Use a flashlight to see if there are any clumps of hair left in the drain. Try to remove loosened clumps of hair with a piece of iron wire. When the water drains properly, screw the drain cover on.

Tips

  • Consider placing a fine wire hair strainer on your drain so that clumps of hair don't clog your shower drain again.
