This wikiHow teaches you how to contact TracFone in the US to ask for the code to unlock your phone and use a different carrier. Note that TracFone considers very strictly the necessary conditions to be unlocked for their device.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Ask for the unlock code

1. 

   Call TracFone. Contact the customer service call center at 1-800-867-7183 from 8:00 am to 11:45 pm Eastern Time in the US (ET), 24/7.
   • If you bought a phone without using TracFone, it is likely that the device is already unlocked and no code is needed.

   Ask for the unlock code for the phone. The operator will verify if your phone and account are eligible for unlocking.
   • You can click here to view the unlock policy of TracFone.
   • Only GSM phones using SIM can unlock. Other phones, such as CDMA, often cannot be used with other carriers.

   Write down the code. The unlock code is usually between 10 and 15 characters, you will need to use this code to unlock your device. advertisement

Part 2 of 2: Unlocking the phone

1. 

   Prepare a SIM card. Contact the carrier of the new SIM card you want to switch to.

   Power off the phone. Power off your phone as usual.

3. 

   Take out the TracFone SIM. Depending on your Android model, the SIM card will be in the slot on the side, under the back cover or the battery of the phone.
   • Different phone models have different methods of taking and replacing SIMs. You should see more in the manual or online.

4. 

   Replace the SIM card. Insert the new carrier's SIM card in the tray.

5. 

   Power on the phone. Instead of the normal home screen, you'll see a message that your phone needs to be unlocked first to use the SIM card inserted.

6. 

   Enter the unlock code. Use the keypad to enter the code you received from the TracFone switchboard.

7. 

   Press OK. A confirmation message that the accepted code will appear will appear. From now on, you can use the new carrier on your Android phone. advertisement

• Unlike phones of other carriers (often can get unlock codes on the network), TracFone is designed to be very difficult to crack. There are very few websites that claim that they can provide an unlock code for TracFone devices.
