If you buy a sweatshirt that is too large, don't worry, you can easily shrink it to fit you better! Try soaking your shirt in hot and / or boiling water and wash your shirt in hot water washing. If, after washing and drying, the shirt has not shrunk as expected, you can use an iron to keep the shirt moist. With these methods, the shirt will shrink to fit you!

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Use a washer and dryer

  1. Check the shirt tag for washing instructions and material type. Check that the label has specific laundry instructions. Many fabrics will shrink easily when exposed to high temperatures, others not. If the label tells you to wash with cold water, you can wash the shirt with warm water to make it shrink.
    • Cotton fabrics are easy to shrink, for example, and so is cotton blended with polyester.
    • Synthetic fabrics, such as non-shrink nylon and rayon.

  2. Try washing the sweatshirt in hot water. To do this method, put the sweatshirt in a clean basin and rinse the hot water over the shirt for about 5-10 minutes, then wait for the shirt to cool to room temperature and re-size.
    • If you are satisfied with the shrinkage, you can take it to wash as usual.
    • If you want the shirt to shrink a little more, use boiling water, washer and / or dryer.
    • To check the size of your shirt, hold it on your body and look in the mirror to see if it fits.

  3. Soak cotton sweatshirts in boiling water. If after using hot water the shirt still does not shrink as you like, turn on the stove and boil a large pot of boiling water. When the water starts to boil, put the shirt in the pot, cover the pot and turn off the heat. Boiling water will cause the shirt to shrink even more.
    • If you want the shirt to shrink 1 size, you need to soak it in the pot for 10-15 minutes.
    • If you want the shirt to shrink 2 sizes, you need to wait until the water temperature is at room temperature.
    • Do not use this method on sweatshirts made from polyester. High temperatures can cause the fabric to become coarse. Polyester fabric should not be exposed to temperatures exceeding 81 ℃.
    • Or, you can put the garment in a pot and pour hot water over the garment, then let the water cool to room temperature.

  4. Wash in hot water wash after soaking clothes in hot water. Once you've soaked the garment in hot and / or boiling water, put it in the washing machine. You can wash and shrink sweatshirts with other tops, such as t-shirts. Choose the right amount of washing and wash the garment with a lid full of detergent / detergent. After washing is finished, you need to check the size of the shirt before drying.
    • For maximum shrinking effect, you should choose the longest washing cycle. If you only want the shirt to shrink 1 size, you can choose to wash with a regular cycle.
    • If you wash a little, you only need half of the detergent / detergent cap.
    • When you check the size of the shirt, you will hold the wet shirt over your body and look in the mirror to estimate the size of the shirt. Once the shirt is dry, you can try it on to see if it fits.
  5. Put the shirt in the dryer and dry on the highest heat. If the shirt hasn't shrunk as you want it to, dry it on high heat for as long as possible. Doing so will help the shirt continue to shrink.
    • If the shirt has shrunk as desired, follow the drying instructions on the shirt label, most likely using medium heat and normal drying time.
  6. Check the shirt size after it cools to room temperature. After the drying cycle is complete, spread the shirt on a flat surface, wait for the shirt to cool to room temperature and try to check the size.
    • If you still want more cozy shirts, you can try the iron.

Method 2 of 2: Use an iron

  1. Wet the sweatshirt. If you are not satisfied with the size of the shirt, just wet the shirt with warm water, squeeze out the water and spread the shirt on the toilet.
    • Using an iron can make your shirt shrink by 1 size.
  2. Spread a cotton towel over your shirt if it's made from polyester. Polyester fabrics are susceptible to damage or harden when exposed to high temperatures. To avoid this, spread a cotton towel or t-shirt on top of your polyester shirt before ironing. This step applies to shirts containing 50% or more of polyester.
    • For cotton sweatshirts, you do not need to cover them with a towel.
  3. Use medium heat to avoid burning clothes. You will turn on your iron and wait for it to warm up. If it is on high heat, it may burn rather than shrink; is that with low heat the coat will not shrink.
  4. It was with just the right amount of force to make the shirt shrink. Place the iron on the shirt with moderate force and slowly, without leaving the iron in the same place for more than 10 seconds.
    • Leaving the iron in one place for too long will burn your garment.
  5. Leave it on until it is almost dry. Because you get the garment wet before it is done, steam will rise when the iron comes into contact with the garment. This evaporation reaction will help the shirt shrink. When most of the water on the shirt has evaporated, the shrinkage is also completed.
    • If the shirt is still damp, you can take it to dry or dry in a dryer for 10-20 minutes.
