Hamsters feel best at a temperature of around 18 to 24 ° C. When it's warmer than that, it's important to make sure your hamster stays cool. Hamsters can't sweat the way humans can, so you have to make sure your pet stays comfortable when the weather is hot.

Part 1 of 2: Preventing overheating

1. Watch for overheating. Hamsters are very sensitive to heat and can easily overheat. Look out for the following heat stroke symptoms:
   • Panting
   • Bright red tongue
   • Drooling
   • Depression
   • Weakness
   • Do not move
   • Convulsions
2. Move the cage to a cooler part of the house. Walk around your house and try to find the coolest spot. Try moving your hamster's cage to that spot.
   • Place the cage in a lower part of the house. Heat rises, so the coolest part of your home may be the basement.
   • The bathroom and kitchen are also cool places. Tiles can be cool and comfortable for your hamster.
3. Use a fan. Do not aim the fan at your hamster itself, as this can stress him out and make him too cold. Instead, make sure the area where the cage is located is well ventilated and has a good fan. This helps to circulate the air and keep the room cool.
4. Avoid direct sunlight. Keep your hamster's cage out of direct sunlight. On hot days, make sure that the cage is not exposed to the sun shining through the windows. Hamsters and other small animals can easily get heat stroke from the sun.
   • Avoid other heat sources such as fireplaces, stoves and radiators.
5. Make sure the cage is well ventilated. Make sure your hamster's cage is well ventilated. Experts prefer iron wire cages to plastic or glass containers or aquariums for this reason.
   • If you keep your hamster in an aquarium, it is especially important that you keep the aquarium in a well-ventilated area.
6. Use cold water. An easy way to keep your hamster cool is to give it cool water. Hamsters can quickly become dehydrated, so it's important to make sure your hamster always has fresh, clean water available.
7. Don't play too much with your hamster. Hamsters cannot sweat and are therefore at risk of dehydration more quickly than other mammals. It is important to play with your hamster as little as possible when the weather is hot to prevent it from overheating.
   • If you want to pick up your hamster and play with him, do this early in the morning or in the evening when the temperature is lower.
8. Never leave your hamster in a hot car. Never let a hamster or other pet sit in a car when the weather is hot. It can get very hot in the car, which can be fatal for animals. If you take your hamster to the vet or take it with you, make sure you protect your hamster from dangerously high temperatures.

Part 2 of 2: Using the freezer

1. Give your hamster frozen treats. Freezing your hamster's favorite food is an excellent way to cool it down on a hot day. Be careful and stick to treats that your hamster can safely eat. Consider freezing the following:
   • Barley
   • Cashew nuts
   • Linseed
   • Millet
   • Oatmeal
   • Peanuts
   • Pumpkin seeds
   • Sesame seed
   • Cooked potatoes
2. Give your hamster a frozen water bottle. Fill a water bottle or an empty soda bottle about half full with water. Wait until the water is completely frozen. Then wrap the bottle in a towel or cloth and place it in your hamster's cage.
   • Make sure to wrap something around the bottle. The frozen bottle can be painful for your hamster's skin.
   • A good tip is to freeze the bottle lying down. That way, the hamster has a larger surface to rest against when you put the bottle in the cage.
   • You can also use a frozen ice pack.
3. Freeze bathing sand. Hamsters like to take a bath in bathing sand. You can treat your hamster to a cool bath by freezing his bath sand. Place a cup of bath sand in a resealable plastic bag. Place the bag in the freezer for several hours, remove the sand from the bag and sprinkle it in your hamster's cage.
4. Freeze his earthenware house. If you have an earthenware house in your hamster's cage, you can freeze it for several hours to create a cold environment. Pottery holds the cold well and can be a cool retreat for an overheated hamster.
   • You can also place a frozen pottery or marble tile in his cage.
5. Hang a frozen towel over or around the cage. Dampen a towel and freeze it for several hours. Hang it over the outside of your hamster's cage and wrap it around the bottom of the cage. This creates a cold barrier that your hamster can lie against.
   • Make sure you don't block the air circulation in the cage with the towel.

• Getting the hamster too cold can be just as dangerous as overheating. Keep a close eye on your hamster to make sure it is acting normally.
