Removing waterproof mascara can be a daunting task because it is designed to be resistant to water, making washing your face a useless way to remove it. But don't fear! Waterproof mascara can be removed quickly and effectively using commercial and natural products.

Method 1 of 3: Using commercial products

1. Use an eye makeup remover. There are many products on the market that are specially designed to remove waterproof mascara. A good waterproof eye makeup remover will remove all traces of mascara quickly, safely and effectively. If you use a lot of waterproof mascara, investing in a good remover is well worth the money.
   • Opt for an oil-based eye makeup remover, which will be more effective on waterproof makeup.
   • Always use hypoallergenic products, even if you don't have sensitive skin. The ingredients used in hypoallergenic products are less harmful to your skin.
   • Go for a well-known brand such as Lancôme, Clarins or Elizabeth Arden. Because these products ensure high quality, it is less likely to irritate your eyes.
   • Use a cotton swab or cotton swab to apply the makeup remover. Close your eyelids and let the pad rest on your eyelashes for a few seconds. Then swipe down towards the lash ends. Repeat this, using new pads as needed until all products have been removed and a new pad comes out clean.
2. Use baby shampoo. Baby shampoo can be effective in removing waterproof mascara. Baby shampoo is generally quite safe to use on the sensitive eye area, as most baby shampoo brands are hypoallergenic and free from dyes and fragrances.
   • Just use a little bit of baby shampoo and apply it to your lashes. Avoid getting the baby shampoo in your eyes.
   • Never use regular shampoo as it will irritate your eyes.
   • Using normal shampoo will irritate your eyes; therefore never use this in the sensitive area around the eyes.
3. Apply skin ointment. Use skin ointment to remove stubborn make-up such as waterproof mascara. Skin ointment is suitable for removing make-up from all over your face.
   • Wash your face with your usual facial cleanser, pat dry and apply the skin ointment as an intensive care treatment.
   • Let the ointment soak into your skin for a few minutes before wiping it off with a warm washcloth.
   • Skin cream should not be applied to the eyelids, but should be rubbed gently into the eyelashes and wiped away.
4. Avoid using petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a by-product of gasoline and is therefore not the ideal substance to use around your eyes.
   • Only use it when you have nothing else to hand and avoid contact with the eyes.

Method 2 of 3: Using natural products

1. Remove your eye makeup with olive oil. Because the mascara waterproof you can use the opposite of water, namely oil. Oil breaks down the waterproof properties of your mascara, which helps the mascara to slide off your lashes easily without scrubbing hard.
   • Put some olive oil on your thumb and index finger and massage it into your lashes until all lashes are covered with oil. The mascara should then come off easily.
   • If your skin still feels oily afterward and you can't easily remove it with a clean, dry cloth, wash your face.
2. Use coconut oil. Coconut oil does its job; it breaks down the waterproof properties of your mascara and also moisturizes the sensitive skin around your eyes.
   • Put a lick of coconut oil on a cotton ball and wipe it over your eyes.
3. Make a mix of water, witch hazel and jojoba or almond oil. This mix has a shelf life of 6 months and does not irritate the eyes.
   • Mix 2 tablespoons of water with 2 tablespoons of witch hazel and 2 tablespoons of jojoba or almond oil in a transparent container or bottle.
   • Shake the mix to make sure the ingredients are well blended. Apply the mix to your eyes (with clean hands!) Or apply it on a cotton pad to remove the make-up.

Method 3 of 3: Correctly remove waterproof mascara

1. Use cotton wool, cotton pads, or cotton buds to remove the mascara. It is important to use the correct materials to be sure all mascara has been removed. This prevents irritation of the eye area.
   • Disposable makeup remover wipes are good for gently removing waterproof mascara, as long as the packaging states that it is made to remove waterproof or long-lasting makeup.
   • You can also use hypoallergenic baby wipes or a clean, damp washcloth.
2. Hold the cotton ball against your lashes for 10-20 seconds. This allows the makeup remover to break down the mascara.
3. Ready.

Tips

• Buy value packs of cotton pads and cotton buds so you always have them at hand!
• The oils can irritate your eyes. Instead of applying the oil directly to your lashes, you can put the oil on a tissue or cotton ball and gradually remove your mascara.

Warnings

• You may be allergic to certain products or ingredients. Test each individual product on your wrist before using the product on the sensitive area around your eyes.
