Garlic skins are difficult to remove by hand or with a small knife. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to quickly remove garlic skins. If you want to work quickly and maintain a brisk pace in the kitchen, use the shake method or the garlic peeler method.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Shake garlic

  1. Take a whole bulb of garlic. Remove a few cloves from the bulb if you don't need much.
  2. Purchase a silicone garlic peeler from a kitchen supply store. They usually cost between 2 and 5 euros. Most peelers look like a small cylinder made of silicone. Other peelers are a sheet of rubber that you have to roll up yourself.
  3. Remove some cloves of garlic from the outside of the bulb. You can also loosen all the toes by applying pressure with the heel of your hand.
  4. Place the garlic peeler on your cutting board. Put the garlic cloves in the cylinder. If your peeler is a sheet of rubber, you can roll the cloves in and hold it tightly so that it stays put.
  5. Roll over the top of the cylinder with the heel of your hand. Repeat until you have rolled each section of the cylinder that contains garlic. Put a lot of pressure.
    • Your hands won't break or get smelly because you don't touch it.
  6. Tilt the peeler so that the peeled garlic falls out. If you use a sheet of rubber you can roll it open. Discard the garlic skins.

Method 3 of 3: Hit it with a flat knife

  1. Place an unpeeled garlic clove on a flat surface and place the flat part of a chef's knife on it. Make sure the sharp side of the knife is facing away from you.
  2. Gently and quickly hit the top of the chef's knife with the underside of your outstretched palm. The goal is not to break the clove, but only to loosen the skin from the garlic clove. A quick, gentle blow should be enough.
  3. Remove the knife and continue to peel the garlic by hand. The skin will now be easy to remove from the garlic clove.
