This article will show you how to get rid of Trojans (a type of malware) on your computer.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: On Windows

1. 1 Open the start menu . Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. 2 Start Windows Defender. Enter defender, and then click Windows Defender Security Center at the top of the Start menu.
3. 3 Click on ☰. It's in the upper-left corner of the window. A pop-up menu appears on the left side of the window.
4. 4 Click on Virus and threat protection. It's in the upper-left side of the pop-up window.
5. 5 Click on Advanced scan. It's a link in the middle of the page. The scan settings page opens.
6. 6 Check the box next to "Full scan". You will find this option at the top of the window.
7. 7 Click on Scan now. It's near the bottom of the window. Windows Defender will begin scanning your computer for malware.
8. 8 Wait for the scan to complete. If Windows Defender finds the Trojan, it will be automatically quarantined and then removed, so there is no need to take additional steps.
9. 9 Run an offline scan. Offline, when the computer is disconnected from the Internet, Defender can find and remove sophisticated malware. When you run such a scan, the computer will reboot, and the process itself will take about 15 minutes:
   • Click ☰> Virus & Threat Protection;
   • check the box next to "Autonomous Defender check";
   • click "Scan Now";
   • follow the instructions on the screen.
10. 10 Reinstall Windows. If Windows Defender was unable to remove the trojan, you will most likely have to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows.
    • Do this only as a last resort, because formatting the drive will delete all files.
    • Please back up important files before formatting the disk, but be aware that Trojans can be added to user files. Therefore, we recommend that you back up only the most essential files, and not the entire hard drive.

Method 2 of 3: On Mac OS X

1. 1 Download Malwarebytes for Mac OS X. Go to https://ru.malwarebytes.com/mac-download/ and download Malwarebytes.
   • Antivirus is not preinstalled on Mac computers. Malwarebytes is a reliable anti-malware program.
   • If your Malwarebytes download does not start, please click on the "Click here" link at the top of the page.
2. 2 Install Malwarebytes. Double click on the downloaded PKG file, allow to install programs from unknown developers (if prompted), and then follow these steps:
   • click "Continue";
   • click on "Accept";
   • click "Install";
   • enter your username and password;
   • click "Install the program";
   • click Close.
3. 3 Launch Malwarebytes. Click Spotlight , enter malwarebytes in Spotlight and double-click on "Malwarebytes" at the top of the search results.
4. 4 Click on the tab Dashboard. It's in the upper-left corner of the Malwarebytes window.
5. 5 Click on Run check. This button is at the bottom of the window. Malwarebytes will begin scanning your computer for malware, including Trojans.
   • If Malwarebytes finds malware, it will automatically quarantine it.
6. 6 Click on the tab Examination. You will find it on the left side of the window.
7. 7 Click on Confirmwhen prompted. It will appear at the bottom of the Malwarebytes window. This will remove the found malware, including Trojans.
8. 8 Reinstall Mac OS X. If Malwarebytes was unable to remove the Trojan, you will most likely have to format your hard drive and reinstall Mac OS X.
   • Do this only as a last resort, because formatting the drive will delete all files.
   • Please back up important files before formatting the drive, but be aware that Trojans can be added to user files. Therefore, we recommend that you back up only the most essential files, and not the entire hard drive.

Method 3 of 3: How to Avoid Trojan Infection

1. 1 Update your computer software. Remember that system and program patches that neutralize or remove Trojans are released when powerful Trojans infect multiple computers.
   • Update your antivirus and firewall regularly to improve the security of your computer and prevent a Trojan from downloading.
2. 2 Don't download files from untrusted sites. Almost any program can be downloaded from its developer's website (on the official website); for example, Steam, which most players use, can be downloaded from the Steam website. If you download programs from third-party sites, there is a risk that malware will be installed.
   • The exception to this rule are "mirror" sites, links to which are provided on the official website of the program.
3. 3 Do not use P2P networks (torrents). As with third-party sites, torrent downloads pose a threat to the operating system.
   • This is especially true if you are downloading a hacked program, because Trojans often disguise themselves as installation files for other programs.
4. 4 Do not disable your antivirus and firewall software. Some programs recommend disabling the firewall or antivirus for a short period of time, but this puts the system at risk and can lead to Trojan infection.
5. 5 Remove potentially dangerous programs in safe mode. Safe mode runs only the most essential programs and services; in this mode, dangerous programs are disabled, so they can be removed without damaging the system and with confidence that they will not be reinstalled.
   • Typically, Safe Mode removes programs that install unnecessary toolbars (such as Bing).

Tips

• Trojans are less common on Mac computers (compared to Windows computers), but this does not mean that Mac OS X cannot be infected with a trojan. Therefore, be careful when downloading files.

Warnings

• Unfortunately, you can only get rid of powerful Trojans by formatting your hard drive and reinstalling your system.
