Onigiri is a dish that is often made to take in a bento box. It is very suitable for a picnic or as a simple snack. What does "onigiri" really mean? It is the Japanese word for "rice ball" or "musubi" and literally means rice that you can hold in your hand. There are different types of onigiri because you can put in any filling you like or simply eat the rice without the filling. In this article you can read how to make a triangular onigiri.

Ingredients

  • Rice
  • Filling (tuna and mayonnaise / beef and broccoli)
  • Water
  • Seaweed
  • Optional:
    • Vinegar
    • Sugar
    • salt

To step

  1. Wrap cling film around the onigiri or put it in your bento box. Enjoy your meal!

Tips

  • Try to get all the moisture out of the filling, because a wet filling will make your onigiri sticky, dirty and fall apart.
  • The rice will become a bit stickier if you knead it with a mixture of salt, rice vinegar and water. This can be a good idea if the rice ball falls apart quickly.
  • Don't just eat your onigiri for lunch. It can also be a good breakfast or snack.
  • Don't use stuffing with ingredients (like raw fish) that will spoil if left out too long unless you can cool your bento box.
  • If you like onigiri, it might be a good idea to buy special onigiri molds. These are generally plastic and relatively inexpensive. With some bento boxes you get onigiri shapes that fit exactly in the container.
  • You can use any type of rice you want. Medium-sized white rice and brown rice hold the best shape and stick together.
  • If you find it difficult to put the filling in your rice balls, make two halves with the filling and push them together. Use the saline solution to smooth and seal the seams.
  • Put vinegar and salt on the rice to give it more flavor, or make a mixture of vinegar, salt and sugar. Always add a little bit to the hot rice and mix it with it. Do not use too much of the mixture, as it is intended to enhance and not overpower the flavor of the rice.
  • Glutinous rice absorbs water and therefore sticks together.

Necessities

  • Sticky rice (not instant rice, because it doesn't stick)
  • Seaweed
  • Filling (optional)
  • Stove and pan or rice cooker
  • A shape, for example a triangle (optional)
