This wikiHow teaches you how to check how long your computer has been on since it was last shut down.

To step

Method 1 of 3: In Windows

  1. Open "Task Manager". You can do this in several ways:
    • Press Esc while you ⇧ Shift+Ctrl pressed.
    • Press Del while you Alt+Ctrl and click Task management.
    • Type "Task Manager" in the search bar of the Start menu, then click "Task Manager" at the top of the search results.
  2. Click the Performance tab. It is at the top of the "Task Manager" window.
  3. Click the CPU tab. You can find this option on the left side of the "Task Manager" window.
    • If you are using Windows 7 or older, skip this step.
  4. Look for the heading "Time Active". You can see this in the bottom half of the "Task Manager" window.
  5. Look at the number to the right of the heading "Time Active". This number (displayed in the format DD: HH: MM: SS) shows the amount of time your computer has been on since you last turned it off.
    • For example, a "Time Active" value of "01: 16: 23: 21" would mean that your computer was on for a day, sixteen hours, twenty-three minutes, and twenty-one seconds without shutting down.
    EXPERT TIP

Click on the Apple icon. It's in the top left corner of the screen. When you do this, a drop-down menu will appear.

  6. Click About This Mac. This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  7. Click on System Report or "System Information". You can see this on the left side of the "About This Mac" window.
  8. Click on the heading "Software". This is on the left side of the window. By clicking on this heading you open the "Software" overview in this main window.
  9. Look for the heading "Time since boot". This option is at the bottom of the list of information in the center of the page. The number to the right of this header determines how long your Mac has been on since the last time it was turned off.

Method 3 of 3: In Linux

  1. Open the Terminal. You will usually find the Terminal in the application menu of your distribution. If you are using Gnome, press ⊞ Win and type Terminal to find it.
  2. Type uptime -p and hit Enter. This indicates how long your computer has been on.

Tips

  • If your computer has been on for more than a day, consider restarting it.

Warnings

  • If you don't shut down your computer every now and then, it will eventually slow down much.
