Sometimes a recipe calls for melted marshmallows, but doesn't tell you how to melt them. This article will show you three different ways to melt marshmallows and what recipes you can use each method for.

Ingredients

Marshmallows melted on the stove

  • One bag (450 grams) of marshmallows
  • Four tablespoons of water
  • Shortening
  • A teaspoon of vanilla flavor (optional)
  • 375 to 500 grams icing sugar (optional, for fondant)

Melted marshmallows in the oven

  • Fifteen large marshmallows, cut in half
  • Half a tablespoon of butter
  • 625 grams of chocolate chips (optional)
  • Digestives (optional, and as a replacement for Graham's cracker squares)

To step

Method 1 of 3: Melt marshmallows on a gas stove

  1. Assemble an au-bain-mari set. Pour a layer of water into a large pan and place a second pan on top. You can also use a heat-resistant container for this. Make sure the bottom of the top pan does not touch the water. The au-bain marie set will cause the marshmallows to melt slowly so you can use them as a dip or put them in a fondant.
  2. Grease a rubber spatula and the inside of the top pan. This will keep the marshmallows from sticking to the jar and spatula as they melt.
  3. Place a cast iron saucepan with a diameter of 20 cm in your oven and preheat it to 225 degrees Celsius. The pan will need to be very hot before you can add the marshmallows, so leave the saucepan in the oven while it preheats. With this method you can make a s'mores dip.
    • If you don't have a cast iron saucepan, you can use another oven-safe dish instead.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the oven and place it on a heat-resistant surface. Make sure to use a pan support as the saucepan will be very hot. Do not turn off the oven.
  5. Return the saucepan to the oven. Let the marshmallows bake for five to seven minutes. The tops will turn golden and crispy, but the insides will be soft and sticky.
    • If you want a crunchy, burning texture, light the grill for the last few minutes. Pay close attention to prevent them from burning.
  6. Take the saucepan out of the oven. Put it on a heat-resistant surface and let the dip cool for five minutes.
  7. Make a campfire or light a gas grill. If you're using a gas grill, set it to medium or high so you have some flames. You'll be roasting the marshmallows in the fire, which will give you a nice, crunchy exterior and a soft, gooey interior.
  8. When the marshmallow is cooked, remove it from the flames. You can tell that the marshmallow is melted inside when the outside is golden brown and crunchy to the touch.
    • If you want your marshmallow seared, keep it closer to the flames and keep toasting it.
    • This method is perfect if you want to toast marshmallows as a garnish. For example, a marshmallow milkshake can have several toasted marshmallows added to the mixture in the blender, one on top for garnish.
  9. Consider serving the marshmallow as a s'more. Break a digestive in half and put a small piece of chocolate on one of the halves. Put the marshmallow (without pulling out the stick or skewer) on top of the chocolate and press it down with the other half digestive. While still pressing down on the digestive, pull the skewer or stick out of the marshmallow. Wait a moment before serving so that the marshmallow can cool and the chocolate melt.
    • When you have toasted all your marshmallows, don't forget to turn off your gas.

Tips

  • Make sure to grease your bowls, plates, pans, spatulas and hands. Melted marshmallows are sticky, and the butter will keep them from sticking to everything.
  • If the marshmallows are too sticky to put in the fridge, try adding a tablespoon of cream.

Warnings

  • Never leave your paraffin stove, oven, campfire or grill unattended.
  • If you're using a campfire, make sure you're working safely. Keep the fire well under control and have a bucket of water nearby.
  • Keep in mind that baking times and cooking times may vary depending on your equipment. Monitor your melting marshmallows carefully to avoid burning or burning.
