Updating hair with chopsticks is a popular style that women have loved for centuries. Hair sticks of their own have been discovered amid the ruins of multiple ancient cultures, including Egypt, China, Greece, Turkey, and Japan. These are thought to be possibly the very first hair accessory ever invented, which makes it an interesting hairstyle in its own right! It's a timeless look with a modern feel - and it's pretty easy for anyone to use once you know how.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Use chopsticks to make a traditional bun

  1. Find some chopsticks. A restaurant's wooden kind will work, but not for long, as they break easily, trapping splinters in your hair and possibly even hurting yourself. There are smooth bamboo ones you can buy that are much higher quality. You can also buy them from plastic, which is usually the cheapest.
    • Whatever you decide to use, make sure the sticks are clean and new!
    • Metal chopsticks are another option, although these are a bit more difficult to find.
    • Check out the hair care aisles at your local drug stores and grocery stores - you'll likely be able to find a variety of hair sticks in different styles to experiment with.
  2. Make sure the bun is secure. You can put in a few hairpins just to be on the safe side. When you are confident that it feels comfortable and is in place, it is ready for the finishing touch.
  3. Round it off (optional) and your hairstyle is complete! If you are concerned about the hold of your style, try spraying a short mist of hairspray all over the style. If you have bangs, arrange them the way you like best and spray a short mist of hairspray to set it.

Tips

  • Decorate the chopsticks for extra effect. You can paint them or try putting sequins or rhinestones on them for decoration. You can even drill a small hole and thread and tie sparkling crystal beads or small, ornate objects that weigh very little. Of course, only add decorative elements to the ends of the sticks that won't be pushed through your hair.
  • There are also sticks that are only for hair purposes. You can buy these for extra effect.
  • If the wooden chopsticks are too long, trim them a bit to fit the length of your hair. Smooth them out at the end with sandpaper before using them.
  • If you are using this style on a busy or even a normal day, don't forget to use hairpins and regularly check your hair in a mirror to make sure your hair has not come off anywhere and the chopsticks have not fallen out .
  • Chopsticks come in a variety of lengths, including the Chinese chopsticks (about 26cm long) and the more common Japanese chopsticks (between 20-22cm). Hair sticks are also available in a children's size (about 15 cm). Experiment with a few different lengths until you find the sticks that work best for your hairstyle, volume and length.
  • Chopsticks are also available in numerous textures and finishes. If you have very thin hair, try the rough finish sticks. They may hold your hair much better.

Warnings

  • In many Asian countries where chopsticks are used as eating utensils, this hairstyle is often seen as ridiculous or even stereotypical, especially for Asian costumes (wonder how strange you would look with a fork in your hair!). Instead, you could use a hair clip or a decorative comb for a similar look.
  • It's very likely that your scalp will hurt - this usually happens when your hair starts pulling due to its weight. If it hurts too much, just pull out the chopsticks and keep your brush handy to touch up your hairstyle. Don't forget to brush out your hair until tangles are gone before continuing.

Necessities

  • Chopsticks. Plastic chopsticks are the cheapest and colorful chopsticks look cool.
  • Long or medium length hair that you can wear in a medium to high bun.
