White shoes are cool, but one of the drawbacks is that they stain very easily. Black streaks, smudges, mud stains - they all seem to leave indelible marks on your new white Vans. Fortunately, Vans are easy to clean and there are a ton of different ways to polish them up to make them look as good as new again.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Hand cleaning your Vans

  1. Prepare a cleaning agent. Using a mixture of detergent and warm water is an easy way to clean Vans. In a large bowl, mix 60 ml of detergent with half a liter of warm water. If your Vans are very dirty, you may need to prepare a new bowl for the other shoe. If you don't have a lot of detergent at home, you can also try the following cleaning products:
    • Mix 60 ml of dish soap with half a liter of warm water.
    • Mix 60 ml of glass cleaner with half a liter of warm water.
    • Mix 60 ml of shampoo with half a liter of warm water.
    • Use the special cleaning agent from Vans itself. This is sold at shoe stores that sell Vans.
  2. Prepare a second bowl of clean water. You use this bowl to rinse your cleaning cloth during cleaning.
  3. Stuff the shoes with newspaper and let them air dry. Using newspaper will help keep your shoes in shape while drying. Place your shoes in a sunny spot and let them dry completely before putting the laces back on and wearing the shoes.

Method 2 of 3: Washing your Vans in the washing machine

  1. Remove the laces and insoles from the shoes. This easy method works well with mud-covered canvas Vans (do not use this method for suede or leather shoes). Remove the laces and insoles from the shoes so that all parts come out of the washing machine nice and clean.
  2. Stuff the shoes with newspaper and let them air dry. Do not dry them in the dryer, even at a low temperature. The heat will damage the glue in your shoes. Stuff your shoes with newspapers to keep them in shape, then put them in a sunny spot to dry.
    • Check out the shoes to see if you are happy with how clean they got. If you still see dirty spots and stains, use a method specifically designed to remove stains.
    • When the shoes are dry, you can put the insoles and laces back on.

Method 3 of 3: Remove stains and black streaks

  1. Use toothpaste to hide the stain. If you have to go somewhere quickly and don't have the time to clean your white shoes, gently rub a little white toothpaste on the stain. Rub the toothpaste into the fabric until the stain is no longer visible. Finally, remove the stain using one of the other methods described above.

Tips

  • Have your new Vans treated with a waterproofing agent. The next time you buy a new pair of Vans, you can have them waterproofed so that they are less likely to stain. Buy your own waterproofing agent or have it done at a shoe store.

Warnings

  • Shoes with leather parts are generally not suitable for being immersed in water when washing.
  • Bleach can fade the colored parts of your shoes.
