Curling your hair with curling irons can seriously damage it. Instead, try these safe methods while you sleep. These curls are usually not as tight as when using a curling iron, but you can make them stand out quite a bit with a little practice. The cocoon method gives the most extreme results, but can be difficult the first time you try it.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Letting in hairstyles while sleeping

  1. Dampen your hair. Wash and condition your hair and let it dry until it is slightly damp, but no longer dripping.
    • If your hair is tangled, brush out the tangles before washing it.
  2. Arrange your hair. Any straight haircut will curl your hair if you leave it in while sleeping. Loose hairstyles with thick sections of hair create waves, while medium and tight sections create curls. Here are a few options:
    • Braid your hair in two for waves, or four braids for curls. For tighter curls, braid the last half of the braid around a ribbon.
    • Bun on either side of your head for light waves.
    • Make a ponytail at the top of your head. Wrap it with an elastic band and then a hair donut. Wrap thumb-sized sections of the ponytail around the donut until all of your hair forms a bun. Secure the ends with hairpins.
  3. Spray on hairspray. Cover the style with a small amount of hairspray for more defined curls. Spray lightly to avoid damaging your hair.
  4. Leave it in all night. In the morning, gently take the hairstyle out and let your curls fall. If the curls are stiff, gently shake them apart with your hands.
    • Apply more hairspray to keep them in place for a longer period of time.

Method 2 of 4: Curl with elastic

  1. Mix water and hair gel together. Four or five drops of each is enough.
  2. Grab part of your hair. Part your hair into four to nine sections. Wet your palm with the water and gel mixture and gently run over one section three or four times to wet the hair.
    • The more sections you use, the more curls your hair will have.
  3. Wrap the hair around an elastic. Pull the hair section through a large elastic. Wrap the hair around the edge of the elastic, in and out. Keep wrapping until you reach the end of the hair.
    • A headband may work better for thick hair.
  4. Repeat with all remaining parts. Follow the same process with new elastics until all of your hair is wrapped.
    • For best results, apply hairspray to keep your curls in place.
  5. Let go of your hair in the morning. Go to sleep with this hairstyle and let it go in the morning.

Method 3 of 4: Curling with the cocoon method

  1. Grab a small lock of hair. It's usually easiest to start at the back of your head, but you can start anywhere you're comfortable with.
    • If you have afro textured hair, twist the hair for more exaggerated curls.
    • The cocoon method can be more difficult than the previously mentioned methods. Give yourself enough time to learn.
  2. Place two fingers against the hair. Place your index and middle fingers against the lock of hair about an inch from your scalp.
    • Try to keep your nails off your hair.
    • If you are right-handed, use your left hand. If you are left-handed, use your right hand.
  3. Wrap the hair around your finger for a short distance. Wind until the ends of your hair are pointing straight up, then stop. You should now see a "U" shape in your hair, almost like a loop with no top.
  4. Twist the hair above the loop. Twist the strand of hair over the U-shaped loop and curl it around the hair that you left between the U and your scalp. Do this until you have about an inch of hair left.
  5. Pull the end of the hair through the loop. Grab the end of the hair with the two fingers attached in the loop. Pull it through the loop and pull your fingers back. Hold the hair and don't pull it all the way out.
    • The main loop is now filled with hair. On the one hand, there is a dangling strand of hair. On the other side, there is a smaller hair loop. These are the ends of your hair, which usually end straight.
  6. Push down to tighten the knot. Keep holding the end of your hair close to the main loop. Use your other hand to push the hair on the other side towards the loop to tighten the knot. Don't let the end of the hair slip too far or the knot will be undone.
  7. Repeat all over your head. Repeat until as much hair as you want to tie in is knotted.
  8. Leave it in all night. In the morning, pull the little tail that is still sticking out of each knot.

Method 4 of 4: Other methods

  1. Plop your hair. Read this article for instructions on "popping". All you need for overnight curls is a towel and a T-shirt.
  2. Wear hair rollers. Wrap small sections of hair around each roll to create a tight curl. Leave them in all night and take them out in the morning.
  3. Tie socks in your hair. Divide your hair into four to eight sections, depending on the thickness. Place a thin sock over the end of a section and slowly wrap the hair around it. When all the hair is wrapped around it, tie a knot in the sock. Repeat on the rest of the sections and leave it on all night.
    • Do this with slightly damp hair for best results.
