If your PSP has crashed, a hard reset can return the device to normal operation. If your PSP is performing poorly, you can improve it by resetting the device to factory settings. The latter will not erase any of your games (unless you are going to format the memory card).

To step

Method 1 of 3: Performing a hard reset on a crashed PSP

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds. In most cases this will force the PSP to shut down.
    • If this doesn't work, try the right button and hold the power button for about 5 seconds. This should turn off the PSP.
  2. Wait a moment. It's a good idea to wait 30 seconds before turning the PSP back on.
  3. Press the Power button to turn on the PSP as usual.

Method 2 of 3: Restoring a slow PSP to its default settings

  1. Open the XMB menu. This will give you access to the Settings menu.
  2. Scroll left to open the Settings menu.
  3. Scroll down and select System Settings.
  4. Select "Restore Default Settings".
    • If you also want to format the memory stick, select "Format Memory Stick" from the Settings menu.
  5. Follow the prompts to reset your system. When the Sony logo appears, you will be asked to set up the PSP, as if the machine is just new.

Method 3 of 3: Restoring the PSP to factory settings

  1. Turn off the PSP by pushing the Power button up. If the PSP is switched off, wait 30 seconds before switching it on again.
    • This method can be useful if you are unable to turn on your PSP normally.
  2. Hold down Triangle, Square, Start and Select at the same time. You may have to put the PSP down to do this.
  3. Hold down the buttons and slide the Power button to turn on the PSP.
  4. Keep holding the buttons until the Sony logo appears.
  5. Continue with the setup of the PSP system software.
    • This method will not delete modified firmware or downgrade your PSP, and games on your memory card will not be deleted.
