Hightops have made a comeback. Best known as a '80s trend, they have now made a comeback with a wide variety of colors, styles and brands - high-top sneakers have even gone luxurious with brands like Isabel Marant, Viktor & Rolf and Michael Kors who design their own high tops. High tops can be difficult to wear due to their dominance in outfits. In combination with the right outfit, however, high tops can really bring a look together and make you look unique, modern and stylish.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Picking Hightops

  1. Think carefully about which style you are going to adopt. What kind of sneaker do you want to wear: a thin or a thick one? A thin high-top is for example a Converse sneaker; shoes made of a lightweight material that fits snugly against the leg when tied to the top. An example of a fat version is something like a Nike Air Force 1 or a Reebok Freestyle; these are wide at the ankles and have more volume.
    • The problem with thin high-top sneakers is that they can make your ankles look thin and uncomfortable when tied all the way up.
    • Be aware that larger sneakers can make your feet look bigger than they actually are.
  2. Think about which brand you like. What have you bought in the past? Which brand not only looks good, but also fits well on your feet? Converse? Nike? Reebok? Or would you like to go for high-end and wear Raf Simons, Michael Kors or Isabel Marant sneakers?
    • The most important thing to consider when buying high tops is to make sure they fit properly. This may sound like a small thing, but it's easy to get the size and fit wrong, especially when shopping online.
  3. Think carefully about what color you want. Think about what would suit your personal style and what you already have in your closet that would go well with it.
    • Like many things, high tops are best when they are simple. Black is the best and safest choice for both men and women, such as a pair of Reebok Classic Black Hightops. Remember, black goes with just about everything. The second best choice is white or some other solid color such as red, navy, and so on.
    • Little splashes of color can be fun; you want your outfit to match your personality. But keep such bits of color small or keep them only with one color. If you're thinking about going for a bright solid color, the success of your look will depend entirely on the outfit you wear with it.
    • If you're looking at a pair of sneakers that look like M & M's, pause for a moment. You may like the color, but you should also consider whether the color suits you and your wardrobe, and whether it is something you can and will wear for months. Novelty colors are fun and can look really nice, but they can also get old quickly.

Method 2 of 2: Wear Hightops

  1. Wear skinny jeans with high tops. This is a really nice look that is very modern - and it works for both men and women, because skinny jeans are popular with both! Be smart about how you pair your skinny jeans and other skinny pants with your sneakers. For example, if you're wearing black jeans, wear colored high-tops. If you're wearing colorful jeans, maybe go for a more subtle shoe.
    • As a rule of thumb, don't wear high tops that are the same color as your jeans (unless they are both black, as black is a classic base color).
    • This look really brings out the shoes and accentuates the bottom half of your outfit.
  2. Wear pants with wider legs when wearing thin high tops. Wear your Converse or other slim sneakers with wide-leg pants or pants that show a bit of skin between the shoes and pants - this will help keep your body proportions looking good. This outfit is a great option for most women!
    • For men, however, high tops with wide pants are a very bad option. Wide trousers paired with high tops create a bulky look and make men look sloppy instead of cool and stylish.Men should instead wear their high tops with everyday pants with straight or skinny legs, a cool t-shirt and an open cardigan (preferably the same color as the high-tops).
  3. Roll up the legs of your jeans to create some volume and contrast with your sneakers. This is a beautiful spring and summer look that works for both men and women thanks to the recent trend of rolled up trouser legs.
    • Make sure you don't have visible socks.
    • By rolling up your legs you help put the focus on your shoes while deliberately showing some ankle. This actually only works with tight sneakers of one color.
  4. Decorate your sneakers. For women, consider wearing dresses or skirts with high sneakers. This is a beautiful style for women that will accentuate your legs and make them look long and thin.
    • It is particularly nice to wear shoes that are a bit larger and have more volume with dresses or skirts. Because the shoe is heavy, it can stand on its own, and usually does not require wide pants or leggings to fight against.
    • You may want to avoid wearing dresses or skirts with thinner high tops; this look can sometimes look a bit outdated. Think of "skater girls", such as Avril Lavigne circa 2003.
    • Wear socks with your high tops.
    • Men can also dress up their high tops, although that may not usually be with a skirt. A well-fitting trench coat can look very urban-modern and chic in combination with the right high-tops. Just be careful not to look like you're wearing a costume from the movie "The Breakfast Club"!
  5. Combine shorts with high tops for a summer look. This is certainly a good option for men who may not feel comfortable wearing sandals and shorts in the summer time. For women, wearing shorts with high tops is super modern and also very nice to, again, accentuate their figure and beautiful legs!
  6. Tie your shoelaces. This is an important part of wearing high tops as a fashion statement. You want to look cool, not like a slouch who doesn't want to go through the trouble of tying his or her shoelaces.

Tips

  • All these steps are just guidelines. You don't have to follow them exactly. The most important thing is that you create your own style and look unique!
