Emoji's keyboard lets you add fun emoticons to your messages and emails, and you don't even need to download additional software to use the keyboard. Follow the steps in this article to activate the Emoji keyboard on your iPod, iPad or iPhone, suitable for any version of iOS from iOS 8.

Method 1 of 3: Activating the Emoji Keyboard

1. Understand what Emoji is. Emoji originated in Japan, it is a collection of icons such as smiley faces. The keyboard allows you to choose from a variety of icons, which can only be read by devices that support the Emoji characters.
   • All Apple devices with iOS 5 or later support Emoji.
   • Google Hangouts for Android and iOS also supports Emoji.
2. Open your Settings. You will find the Settings on your home screen. Then tap on General.
3. Open the keyboard menu. Scroll down and tap Keyboard. Then tap on Keyboards.
4. Add the Emoji keyboard. You will now see a list of keyboards. Tap the Add Keyboard button. Select Emoji.

Method 2 of 3: Using the Emoji keyboard

1. Open an app to send messages. You can use Emoji in any program to send messages, such as Mail, iMessage, Twitter, etc. Tap the text entry field to bring up your keyboard.
2. Tap the globe icon. You will find the icon next to your space bar. Tap the button until you see the Emoji keyboard.
3. Select your Emoji. Now you can search for your desired Emoji. You can choose from different categories. The first category, with the symbol of a clock, contains your most used emoticons.
   • Within each category you can browse through different pages. Swipe left or right to change pages.
   • If the recipient is using a device that does not support Emoji, they will see blank characters instead of the Emoji.

Method 3 of 3: Remove the Emoji keyboard

1. Open your Settings. Tap on General.
2. Open the keyboard menu. Scroll down and tap Keyboard. Then tap on Keyboards.
3. Remove the Emoji keyboard. Here you see a list of installed keyboards. Tap Edit in the top right. Next to Emoji, tap Delete.
