Gmail browser notifications let you know when a new email or chat arrives, even if you're not looking at Gmail. You can turn on Gmail browser notifications with a few clicks. This currently only works for Chrome users; there are extensions from other makers available that enable the same function.
To step
In the top right corner of Gmail, click "Settings". Or click this shortcut: https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings
In the "General" tab in the settings, look for "Desktop notifications".
Click the corresponding button to turn off both chat and email notifications.
- New email notification to - Send a notification as soon as a new email arrives in your inbox.
- Important mail notification to - Only let you know if Gmail thinks you have received a message you think is important. This is the recommended setting to prevent you from getting too many notifications.
Tips
- Gmail browser notifications are only available to Chrome users. If you're using a different browser, such as Firefox, you can search the Firefox add-on store for similar third-party extensions that do much the same thing as Gmail's notification engine.
- If you get too many notifications, you can easily turn off Gmail notifications again.
Warnings
- Gmail browser notifications only work when your browser is open with Gmail. You don't have to look at it, but it has to be open.
