Making your own soap can put some people off, especially if you are thinking about making soap that requires lye. However, if you use melt & pour soap made from glycerine, it won't take that much time. In your spare time you can make decorative and functional soaps that you can use at home or wrap and give as gifts to family and friends.Read on to find out how to make basic soap as well as some fun variations on it.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Make standard glycerin soap

  1. Buy your supplies. Hobby shops sell blocks of glycerine that you can melt and use as a base for your soap. If you're ambitious, you can also make your own glycerin, but it's easier to buy transparent, white, or colored blocks of glycerin. Clear glycerin soap is always slightly transparent, whichever color you choose. In addition to glycerine, you also need the following things:
    • Essential Oils. Hobby shops sell essential oils intended for use in glycerin soap. You only need a few drops to scent a batch of soap. So you can buy a small bottle. Choose oil made from lemon verbena, rose, lavender, peppermint, or any other oil you want to use to scent your soap.
    • Soap molds. Hobby shops sell many different types of molds, from very small to very large. Make sure to choose a mold that is suitable for glycerine soap. The glycerine soap will slide right out of the mold once it hardens.
    • Isopropyl alcohol. If you don't already have this in your medicine cabinet, buy a bottle from the drug store. Pour some into a clean spray bottle. You will need this later to remove bubbles in the glycerine before it hardens.
  2. Add decorations to the soap. You can add solid objects to the soaps if you want to give them extra appeal. This is a great way to give the soaps a personal touch. This way you can give suitable gifts at baby parties or children's birthday parties. You can of course also make soap that matches the design of your bathroom. Consider the following options:
    • Make flower soaps by sprinkling dried flower petals into the liquid glycerine before pouring it into the molds.
    • Make soap for a birthday party by half filling the molds and then placing a small toy in the center, such as a small plastic animal or something else fun. Pour more liquid soap over the toy to cover it completely.
    • Make baby party soaps by pouring glycerine into the molds and then inserting small plastic rattles or other baby toys.
  3. Make your own soap molds. If you can't find nice molds in the craft store, try making them yourself. Any hard plastic object can serve as a mold. If you choose an item that you normally use for cooking food, make sure you wash it well before using it again.
    • Ice cube molds are very suitable as a soap mold. Use regular rectangular shapes or buy shapes with interesting figures, such as fish, shells or skulls.
    • Use small plastic bowls or cups to make larger bars of soap. You can also use recycled plastic packaging, such as a yogurt cup.

Tips

  • Display your homemade soaps in transparent glass containers to decorate your kitchen or bathroom.
  • If you want to make soft, white soap instead of transparent soap, buy opaque glycerine melt & pour soap. Melt this, pour it into the mold and do not add coloring.
  • Wrap the soap bars in decorated wax paper or clear plastic to keep the surface clean. Then wrap them in gift wrap or craft paper. Wrap it with a ribbon or a bow and give it away as a gift.
  • Use a toothpick or similar object to cut beautiful designs into the soap.

Warnings

  • Molded soap can get very hot. So wear gloves, goggles and cover your skin with clothing. Always keep a close eye on children.
