If your carpet is walked on a lot or has marks from furniture that hasn't been moved for years, then it's time to get the fibers back up and your carpet to look tidy again. Brushing and vacuuming may be enough to treat carpets that are only slightly crushed, but deep impressions need more attention. Use vinegar and water, ice, an iron or a hair dryer to give your carpet a boost. After these pre-treatments, you can rub the carpet with your fingers, scrape it with the edge of a spoon, or comb the fibers with a fork to make them rise again.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Using vinegar

  1. Spray the flat areas of your carpet with vinegar and water. Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the flats and the imprints in your carpet thoroughly. Make sure you spray the parts completely with liquid, but that you do not soak the carpet.
    • Before you start, make sure the atomizer is clean and free of residues from other cleaners or chemicals.
    EXPERT TIP

Let the vinegar soak into the carpet for 10-30 minutes. Allow time for the mixture to soak into the fibers of the carpet. Leave the mixture on for longer or shorter, depending on how deep and flat the prints are. Wait at least ten minutes or even half an hour if the prints are deep.

    • Vinegar is often used as a cleaning agent, so the areas you spray can look cleaner than the rest of your carpet.
  2. Blot the liquid on with a towel. Grab a clean, white towel and gently push it against the wet carpet. Pat the carpet until you have absorbed most of the moisture. Don't push too hard, or you will flatten the carpet again.
    • It is important to use a white towel so that the towel does not stain your carpet.
  3. Scrape the carpet with the edge of a spoon. Hold a spoon so that the edge is against the area of the carpet you are treating. Push the spoon into the carpet and scrape it in straight lines across the carpet. The fibers of the floor covering will rise straight up again.
    • If you don't get the desired result with a spoon, comb the carpet with the tines of a fork.
    • Also, use a non-metallic stiff bristled brush to brush the carpet once the prints are gone. A boar bristle brush works well.
  4. Let the carpet dry before walking over or putting anything on it. After you've treated the carpet, make sure you don't walk on it until everything is dry. Also, don't put furniture back in place while the carpet is still wet. Drying can take two to three hours, depending on the size of the patches.

Method 2 of 4: Melt ice

  1. Place ice cubes on the prints. Grab some ice from your freezer and place it on the prints in your carpet. If you have multiple prints, such as of the four legs of a sofa, use at least one ice cube per print. If the print is five centimeters or more in diameter, use multiple ice cubes per print.
  2. Let the ice melt completely. Once the prints are covered with ice cubes, leave them long enough for them to melt. This can take 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the temperature in the room and the amount of ice cubes you used per print.
  3. Blot up the water with a clean, white towel. When the ice cubes have melted on all of the prints, blot all of the water with a clean towel. Apply light pressure with the towel so that you do not make new impressions in the carpet. Make sure to use a clean, white towel so that it doesn't stain the carpet.
  4. Treat the fibers with your fingers, a spoon or a fork. Rub your fingers over the areas where the prints were so that the fibers are back up as they should. If this does not help to restore the carpet enough, scrape the carpet with the edge of a spoon or comb the fibers with the tines of a fork.
    • Use a soft brush to brush the carpet when the fibers are back up.

Method 3 of 4: Using an iron

  1. Place a wet cloth over the area you want to treat. Grab a white washcloth or small towel from your linen closet. Wet the cloth with warm water and place it over the flat area or imprint in the carpet. If you want to treat a large area, you may need to use several towels or repeat the process a few times.
  2. Steam the cloth with an iron that you have set on the middle setting. Plug in your iron and set it to the medium heat setting. Hold it a few inches above the cloth and move it in circles. Do this for 30 to 60 seconds, then examine the carpet.
    • Do not place the iron on the carpet or cloth as this may damage the fibers of the carpet.
  3. Comb the carpet with your fingers. After heating the area, switch off the iron and place it in a place where it cannot burn anything. Remove the cloth from the carpet and be careful not to burn yourself. Rub your fingers over the carpet so that the fibers rise again. If necessary, put the cloth back on the spot and heat it again.
    • For stubborn fibers, scrape the carpet with the edge of a spoon or comb the fibers with a fork so that they rise more.
    • Brush the carpet afterwards so that it looks even.

Method 4 of 4: Using a hair dryer

  1. Fill an atomizer with clean water. Find a new atomizer or rinse an old atomizer thoroughly. Fill it with warm tap water. You can also use bottled or distilled water. Do not use very hot water as it can damage the fibers of some carpets.
  2. Spray the flat areas of the carpet with water. Make sure to completely spray the prints and flats, but don't use so much water that the carpet gets soaked. Using too much water can ruin your carpeting over time.
  3. Blow-dry the carpet. Grab a hair dryer and plug it into an outlet near an area you want to treat. Set the hair dryer on a low setting. If your hair dryer has a setting to run the fan quickly, you can easily set it to a high setting. Hold the hair dryer six inches from the carpet and move it back and forth across the area.
  4. Treat the fiber. When the carpet is almost completely dry, rub your hand back and forth over the area in question so that the fibers rise again. If the fibers do not lift enough, pick up a brush with stiff but soft bristles and brush the carpet a few times.
