Ankle straps are reminiscent of carefree summer days, long skirts with a floral print and the scent of freshly cut grass. They are a symbol of friendship and a unique accessory to any outfit. Anklets are easy to make at home and can be a great gift for a loved one or boyfriend / girlfriend. With the right tools and some creativity, you will be able to make beautiful anklets in no time.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Make anklets with a twisted staircase

  1. Gather your materials. To make an anklet you will need thread. You can use one color or multiple colors. You will need three pieces of wire for this type of anklet. You can find the thread at a hobby store. When choosing the colors, make sure that you choose colors that mean something to who you are making the anklet for, or that they are colors that simply go together nicely.
    • Colorful thread
    • Scissors
    • Measuring tape
    • Safety pin or adhesive tape
  2. Just measure yourself. Use your tape measure to measure the part of your ankle where you want your ankle strap. Then add 6 inches to this measurement. This will give you plenty of room to tie your anklet. Cut the thread here.
  3. Tie a knot. Tie all three strands in a knot at the end. Leave a few inches above the knot so that you can tie it again when you are done with your ankle strap.
  4. Attach your wire. Use tape or a safety pin to anchor your wire. Attaching it to something sturdy will make it much easier to work with. You can attach it to anything, as long as it keeps the thread still.
    • Your trouser leg
    • A map
    • A table
    • A pillow
  5. Start on your stairs. When your wires are anchored, grab two wires. Hold these and wrap the third strand around the other two and pull them into a knot. You will be able to see the knot on the side of the thread. Repeat this step 10-15 times with the same thread.
    • Make sure to hold your two middle strands as straight and tight as you can. This will make it easier to tie the knots as you will keep them out of the way of your stairs.
  6. Switch color. It's that easy; choose the next color of thread when you have reached the desired length with the first color. Keep the other two straight and use your new color to tie a knot around them. Repeat this with 10-15 knots. Continue this staircase until you reach the length of your ankle.
    • If you notice that a knot is not sitting properly, you can easily untie it. However, this will get more difficult as you progress because your stairs will get tighter and tighter. So pay attention so that you notice the error quickly.
  7. Test the length. Once you have about four inches of thread, test out the length of your anklet. If it's not long enough yet, continue your kick and check the length again when you're done with a color.
  8. Tie up and cut. Tie your anklet now that it's long enough around your ankle (or the ankle of the person you're giving it to). Make a tight knot and cut the extra thread.

Method 2 of 2: Make anklets with beads

  1. Measure your thread. A piece of wire will probably be too weak to hold beads, so using two or three wires will extend the life of your anklet. Cut your thread at the length of your ankle.
  2. Find the center of your anklet. Do this by taking the three pieces of wire together and making them even. Now fold them in half. Mark this spot with a pen.
  3. Thread your middle bead. Choose the bead you want in the center of your anklet and thread it on your thread. Thread it up to the point you just marked and tie a knot on both sides of the bead. This is now your center bead.
    • Beads can represent your outfit, attitude or personality. Choose beads that convey the message you want.
  4. Use a toothpick. Fold your thread over a toothpick to thread the rest of your beads onto your anklet. This will be thin enough that your beads can pass over it, but strong enough to keep your wire from unraveling at the ends.
  5. Measure a distance of about 1 inch from your center bead. Use your tape measure to measure and mark 1 inch from your center bead on both sides. Make a knot in these places and thread your next beads on your anklet. Make another knot after the beads are in place.
  6. Continue to string the beads. Continue to measure 1 centimeter from each bead and fill your anklet with beads that are evenly spaced. Remember to tie a knot on each side of each bead so that they stay in place.
  7. Test the length. Once you have applied your beads to your anklet until there is about two inches of thread left on each side, test out the length of your anklet around your ankle. If you want to add or remove a bead, now is the time to do so.
  8. Use a clasp. For an anklet with beads it is smart to use a clasp, because the beads are heavier than wire alone. A lobster claw clasp is the best choice for an ankle strap and can be easily tied on either side.
    • You don't necessarily have to use a clasp, but the life of your ankle strap will be extended if you do.
