Simply put, a torrent is a file that is shared from computer to computer, without a central server. Files are transferred from distributors (also called "seeders") to requesters (also called "leechers"). Download the µTorrent program and use it to download movies, music and games. Please note that uploading (or seeding) copyrighted material is prohibited in many countries - including the Netherlands.

To step

  1. Download µTorrent at www.utorrent.com. There are different versions of µTorrent for different devices, so make sure to download the Mac version. Determine where you want to download the installation file (such as to your desktop or your Downloads folder).
    • When the download is complete, double-click the uTorrent.dmg file to extract the program.
    • Drag µTorrent to the "Applications" folder.
  2. Open µTorrent by double clicking on the icon. This is how you open the program. You will still have to search online for the torrent you want to download.
    • During installation, µTorrent will try to install some unnecessary programs, such as an extra toolbar for your browser. If you don't want that, you should pay close attention to the fine print in the installation, and only check the options required for installing µTorrent.
  3. Visit a torrent site you trust and search for a torrent. In the search bar, enter the name of what you want to download. Just make sure you are specific enough or you will end up with unrelated search results.
    • For example, if you search for "WWE" you will get a lot of results, and probably not the download you are looking for. So type in something more specific, such as "WWE Wrestlemania 29 New York / New Jersey Full Event", and you'll find a good download faster. Also always search in English if you want to download something in English.
    • If you don't know any torrent sites, search for what you want to download in a search engine and add the word "torrent". For games and software you can also add the word "mac".
  4. View the list of available torrents. Look at the first few results. Decide which one you prefer based on file size (larger files take longer to download, but usually have a higher quality) and file type (avi, mkv, mp4, etc.).
    • If you're not sure which one to pick, go for the torrent with the most seeds.
    • Click on the file and view the responses. Check whether people say it works, that the quality is good, that the file is correct, etc. If there are no or few responses, don't take the risk.
  5. Download the torrent. You do this by clicking on the small magnet, or on the link with "Download this torrent" (Get this torrent). Be careful not to click on links like "download direct", "download" or "magnet download", as these are usually unwanted pop-ups or redirects to other websites.
    • During the download, µTorrent will automatically start seeding the components that have already been downloaded.
    • Even when your download is complete, µTorrent will continue to distribute the file to other users on the BitTorrent network. Only if you delete the torrent from µTorrent, or close µTorrent, will the upload stop.
  6. Wait for the torrent to finish downloading. ΜTorrent should automatically open the torrent file or magnet link. Otherwise you will be asked to choose a program; then set µTorrent as the default program. µTorrent will open an additional window, in which you must click "OK" in the bottom right corner.
    • The duration of the download depends on the file size and the number of seeds.
    • The more seeds, the faster the file will finish downloading.
  7. Click the "Completed" tab to find your file when it has finished downloading. You can open the file by right-clicking on the file and selecting "open in finder", or by clicking the magnifying glass.
    • If you downloaded a movie, right-click on the file, select "Open with" and choose a media player to play the file with.

Tips

  • Check if the torrent was uploaded by a trusted uploader. These usually have a green or purple skull next to their username.
  • Always check the number of seeds and leechers with the torrent. The more seeds, the faster the download. And the more leechers, the slower the download.

Warnings

  • Uploading (or seeding) copyrighted material is prohibited in many countries - including the Netherlands.
