Chalk is a versatile drawing medium that can be used on pavements, walls, paper and other surfaces. To add some variation to your chalk drawings, try drawing with wet chalk. The texture will be different and your drawings will look quite artsy, which you might know from sidewalk chalk artists. Before you know it, you will be creating works of art that people will stop looking at.

To step

1. Get all the chalk you plan to use. If possible, use different colors. This will grab people's attention and make your artwork look professional.
2. Immerse the chalk in a container of water. For example, you can use a glass for this. Make sure that the chalk is about three-quarters submerged.
3. Do not soak the chalk in the water for more than ten minutes. Of course, the chalk shouldn't fall apart. So keep an eye on it, especially if you're using thin chalk. While the chalk is soaking in the water, prepare the paper or surface that you will be using for the artwork. If you're going to draw on a wall, look for grooves and other imperfections that could affect your drawing.
4. Remove the chalk from the water and place it on a surface that will not be damaged by wet chalk. For example, you can place the chalk on a piece of cardboard, a plastic bag, a plate or a concrete surface.
5. Start with your chalk drawing. The colors will look richer and deeper than when drawing with dry chalk. Swipe the colors to blend to create a beautiful effect.
6. Let the rounded chalk drawing dry undisturbed. If you made a drawing on paper, hang it to dry. If you made a drawing on a sidewalk or wall, make sure that no one steps on or rubs against your beautiful drawing.
7. Let the chalk dry on its own so that it returns to its normal appearance. If you keep getting the chalk wet, it will eventually crumble. This allows you to get interesting effects.

• If the surface you are drawing on has imperfections, try to use them in your drawing.
• Be creative in choosing subjects to draw. Don't just focus on one thing, draw a lot of different things.
• Draw on black paper - the effect is great.
• If this is an assignment for a drawing class or a home drawing exercise, ask the drafters to consider ways in which the texture feels different and whether they recognize the different drawing techniques used with wet chalk.
• Dissolve sugar in the water before soaking the crayon in it to get even brighter colors.
• Save any drawings you make. What you might not like yourself can be a beautiful work of art for others. What one finds junk, the other likes. Take color photos from different angles when you're done drawing on a sidewalk or wall.
• A sidewalk chalk artist is also called a "screever" with an English term, like Bert in "Mary Poppins."

Warnings

• Don't apply too much pressure, as wet chalk is weaker than dry chalk and can break easily.
• These drawings are not washed away with water as easily as dry chalk drawings. Wet chalk is more difficult to remove because it is stickier.
• You will run out of chalk very quickly, so use whatever you have and always have a large supply at home.
