A lot of the messaging apps that come pre-installed on Android devices feature message blocking, but this may be limited by the carrier. If the default messaging app does not block messages, you can install it or contact your carrier.

Steps

Method 1 of 5: Use Google Messenger

1. 

   Open Messenger on your Android device. It's a blue circle icon with a white chat box in the top right corner.
   • Not to be confused with Facebook Messenger, which has a similar logo.
   • Google Messenger is available from the Google Play Store on Android devices and comes pre-installed on Nexus and Pixel phones.
   • If you are using another carrier or messaging service, this method will not work for you. Using this app is one of the simplest ways to block messages, so you might consider switching to it if you want to block lots of messages.

   Tap the conversation with the number you want to block. You can block the sender in any conversation.

   Touch ⋮ in the upper right corner to open the options list.

   Touch People & options (User and Options) to open a new screen with conversation information.

   Touch Block & Report Spam (Block and report spam). You will be asked to confirm that you want to block the number.

   Touch OK and messages from this number will be blocked from now on.
   • You will not be notified when you receive a message from a blocked number and the message will be stored immediately.

Method 2 of 5: Using Samsung Messages

1. 

   Open Samsung Messages. This is a messaging app exclusive to Samsung devices.

   Touch ⋮ in the top-right corner of the screen.

3. 

   Touch Settings (Setup) at the bottom of the selection list.

4. 

   Touch Block messages (Block messages) near the bottom of the menu.

5. 

   Touch Block list (Blocklist). That is the first option.
   • If you don't see these options, your carrier may have disabled them. Contact your carrier or try another method below.

   Enter the number you want to block.
   • Touch Inbox (Inbox) to select and block who sent messages that are still saved in the inbox.
   • If you want to block messages from someone named in the contact list, touch Contacts (Contacts) and choose anyone to block.

   Touch the mark +. Now you will not receive notification when there are messages from blocked numbers and their messages are not displayed in the inbox either.
   • Touch the mark - next to the number in Block list (Block list) to unblock.
   • Touch Blocked messages (Blocked messages) below the "Block messages" menu to see messages from blocked senders.

Method 3 of 5: Use HTC Messages

1. 

   Open HTC Messages. This method applies to the messaging app that comes pre-installed on HTC phones. If you're using another app for texting, this method won't work.

   Touch and hold the message you want to block. After holding the conversation with your finger for a while, the screen will display a menu.

   Touch Block Contact (Block contact). This will add the contact to the block list and you will no longer receive messages from that number. advertisement

Method 4 of 5: Use an app to block messages

1. 

   Tap on the Goolge Play Store app. You will find this application in the application store or on the home screen. This will open the app store on your device.

2. 

   Find "sms block" (block message). This will find apps that block messages. You can see a lot of message blocking apps on Android. Some popular applications include:
   • Clean Inbox SMS Blocker
   • Block call and block SMS
   • Text Blocker
   • Truemessenger

3. 

   Install the application you want to use. Each app has its own features, but all of them let you block messages.

4. 

   Set this new app as your default messaging app (when asked). A lot of apps need to be selected as the default messaging app in order to block new messages. That means you will receive and send messages through this app instead of the old messaging app. Particularly Text Blocker does not need this action.

5. 

   Open the block list. That can be the default screen when you open an app, or you have to open that list yourself. In Truemessenger, open Spam Inbox.

6. 

   Add new numbers to the block list. Touch the Add button (the button differs depending on the app), and then enter the number or select the contact you want to block.

   Block strange numbers. Many message blocking apps also let you block unknown numbers. This is a helpful way to block spam, but be careful as it will also block important messages from people who aren't in your contacts. advertisement

Method 5 of 5: Contact carrier

1. 

   Go to your carrier's website. Most carriers have web tools that allow you to block text and email messages. These options also vary from carrier to carrier.
   • AT&T - You must purchase the "Smart Limits" service for your account. After you turn on the service, you can block messages and calls from multiple numbers.
   • Sprint - You need to log in to the "My Sprint" page and enter your phone number in the "Limits and Permissions" section.
   • T-Mobile - You need to have "Family Allowances" enabled for your account. After enabling this feature, you can block messages from 10 other contacts.
   • Verizon - You need to add "Block Calls & Messages" to your account. After you enable this service, you can block multiple contacts at the same time for 90 days.

2. 

   Call your carrier's customer service. If you are harassed, you can ask your carrier to block the number for free. Contact your carrier's customer service and explain that you want to block certain numbers from communicating with your phone number. However, you must be the owner or have the owner's authorization to do this. advertisement
