If you are tired of your hairstyle or you want to dress up as Pippi Longstocking, you might be thinking about dyeing a synthetic wig. This may seem a bit confusing at first because you cannot dye a synthetic wig with regular hair dye, but it is certainly doable. Prepare your hair dye first, then apply and rinse. In no time you will be ready to style your new haircut and show it to everyone.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Making the paint

  1. Mix 1 part alcohol-based ink with 1 part water in a spray bottle. Purchase alcohol-based ink in the color you want to dye your wig at a craft store near you. Pour the contents of the bottle of ink into a spray bottle. Then put the same amount of water in the atomizer, screw the cap on and shake to mix the contents.
    • For a wig with medium length hair, use a 30ml bottle of ink. For a wig with particularly long and / or thick hair, use 2 bottles with 20 ml of ink.
  2. Alternatively, use the ink from a permanent highlighter. If you don't want to buy alcohol based ink and have a permanent highlighter in a color you like, you can use that too. Unscrew the cap and pull the pin apart with pliers. Pull the tube of ink out of the marker and cut it open with a craft knife. Then put the tube with ink in the spray bottle, add as much water as you want and let it sit overnight.

Part 2 of 3: Applying the paint

  1. Buy a synthetic wig in a light color. Choose any wig, as long as it is a light color like white, light blonde, silver or a pastel color. In this way you can start with a blank canvas and you can give the wig the color of your choice.
    • You cannot lighten the color of synthetic hair with a bleaching agent like you can with human hair.
  2. Prepare your workplace. First choose a place outside to dye the wig. The dyeing process can be very messy, so it's best to choose a spot away from valuables. Place a table in the spot of your choice and cover it with newspaper or an old tablecloth that can get dirty. Then put your wig on a wig head and put it on the table.
    • If you can't dye the wig outdoors, opt for a garage or basement.
  3. Put on old clothes and latex gloves. Put on old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty in case you get paint on your clothes. Also put on latex gloves before you start working with the paint, as this will keep your hands clean and you will make less mess.
  4. Place the wig and paint in a plastic bag for an easy alternative method. If you don't have a lot of time and don't want to worry about spilling paint all over the place, pour the ink and water into a plastic bag like a garbage bag. Put the wig in the bag and button it up. Shake the bag for a few minutes if you want a brighter color. If you want a pastel color, let the wig sit in the paint for about 5 minutes.
    • Consider using two bags to reduce the chance of spilling paint or causing the bag to leak.

Part 3 of 3: Rinse and style the wig

  1. Let the wig dry outside. When you have finished dyeing the wig, place the wig head with the wig out in the sun somewhere and let the wig dry completely. This usually takes about an hour, but can take longer if the wig's hair is particularly long and thick.
    • If you are not sure if the wig is completely dry, run your hands through the hair. If you get paint on your hands, the wig will have to dry outside for a while longer.
  2. Ready.

Warnings

  • Make sure there are no grease and other hair care products in the wig's hair, otherwise the wig will not be even in color.
  • Always work in a well-ventilated area so that you are not too exposed to the fumes of the alcohol-based ink.
