Temporarily straightening permed hair is one way to give your curly hairstyle a new look. Some people go to a professional to get a slicked-back hairstyle, but salons can be expensive. If you want to straighten your permed hair yourself, there are several options available.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Create a temporary style

  1. Wash your hair. Choose a smoothing conditioner and a gentle shampoo. Make sure both your shampoo and conditioner have moisturizing properties. Since you will be using heat to style your hair, this can dry out your hair.
    • Heat is harmful to your hair, so take care of it a little while shampooing.
    • After shampooing and conditioning your hair, apply heat protectant.
    • For extra moisture you can use a hair care oil. You don't have to add more than a drop. Make sure not to add the oil too close to your scalp as that can make your hair look oily. Keep the oil 2-3 inches away from the scalp.
  2. Use a hair product. Choose a product that works for your hair type. For example, choose a gel or mousse that is intended to straighten your hair. This gives more control and helps you achieve the style you want.
    • You may be able to find a product that both straightens and protects against heat. Ask your stylist for a recommendation.
  3. Dry your hair for more volume. Blow dry your hair with a diffuser. Start drying at the roots and then continue drying your hair until it is completely dry. While drying your hair, start straightening the hair by brushing it with a regular hairbrush or "combing" it with your fingers.
    • If you have thin hair that tends to dry quickly, you can just let it air dry. However, you will need to use the flat iron to keep your hair looking straight.
    • To make your hair look smoother, run a flat iron over your hair after you dry it.
    • Make sure your hair is completely dry before using any flat iron. If your hair is still wet, a flat iron will cook your hair, which will damage your hair.
  4. Choose the right flat iron if you want a sleek look. If you just want to temporarily remove yourself permanently, a flat iron is the best route. It won't remove you permanently, but will straighten your hair temporarily. Make sure you choose the right flat iron for your hair type.
    • If you have short, thick, or fine hair, look for a flat iron with narrow plates. Ideally, the plates of your flat iron should be between 1 and 2.5 cm wide.
    • For longer hair, look for a flat iron with wider plates. Then choose a flat iron with plates of 3-4 centimeters wide.
    • Regardless of your hair type, make sure your flat iron is not too heavy. If it weighs more than a kilo, you will eventually get sore muscles while using it.
    • While using a flat iron sporadically won't permanently remove you, it can damage your style over time. You can ruin your perm and the heat from the flat iron can cause hair breakage.
  5. Find the correct heat setting. The heat setting you select on your flat iron is important. If it is too hot or too cold, it can be ineffective or even cause damage.
    • Not all flat irons have the option to set the heat. If your hair is undamaged and medium in volume, it should be safe to use a flat iron without adjustable heat. However, if you have special needs regarding your hair, spend a little more on a more expensive flat iron that does have a heat setting.
    • If your hair is fine or damaged, keep the temperature at 120-150 degrees Celsius.
    • If your hair is of medium thickness, set the temperature to 150-180 degrees Celsius.
    • If you have thick hair, set the temperature to 180-204 degrees Celsius.
  6. Straighten your hair. Once the flat iron has heated up, you can start straightening your hair. This can take some time, so be patient.
    • Part your hair before you start straightening. Divide your hair into four sections, then work 1 cm per strand until you have finished each section. Do not try to straighten more than about 1 cm of hair at one time. Thicker hair will need to be divided into more sections than thinner hair.
    • Start with your hair near the neck. Comb this part and then pass it with your flat iron. Comb it again after straightening.
    • Work through your hair with the flat iron, one section at a time. Work slowly and steadily. Ideally, you will manage to straighten every section of your hair the first time you try. Going over the same section multiple times can dry out the hair and lead to damage.
    • Apply a little pressure with the flat iron. Don't hurt yourself, but applying a little pressure can help get your hair smooth and flat on the first try.

Method 2 of 3: Using a "perming kit" for a long-term effect

  1. Apply deep conditioner to your hair. If you want to get rid of a perm permanently, you can do this by using a perm kit to reverse the chemical process that caused the perm. Before using a perm kit, however, you should put conditioner in your hair. If possible, do this the day before using the kit.
    • Shampoo your hair and then towel dry it. Comb your hair and divide it into four to six sections. If you have thicker hair you will need more sections.
    • Apply the conditioner to your hair one section at a time. Start at the root and work your way down to the ends. When you are done with all the sections, put your hair in a shower cap. Apply heat to your hair. You can use a hood dryer, with the heat on medium, for 20 minutes. If you don't have a hood dryer, you can put a towel in the dryer and keep it wrapped around your head for 20 minutes.
    • Once you are done applying the heat, remove the shower cap and rinse your hair under cool running water. Dry your hair and then brush it as usual.
  2. Wash your hair and apply wave lotion. When you are ready to use the perm kit, wash your hair. Then apply the wave lotion that you will find (should be) in the perm kit.
    • Style your hair as usual, even if your hair is wet. For example, part it sideways, or comb your bangs forward if you have one. If necessary, use a towel to prevent lotion from getting on your face.
    • Comb the lotion through your hair. Use a wide comb for the process. Comb for about 10 minutes at a time, until your hair is completely saturated with the lotion.
    • Check your hair in the mirror. Hopefully the curls will relax a bit now. If this doesn't work, comb your hair for another five minutes or until it takes effect.
  3. Rinse the lotion from your hair. Once your curls start to unfurl, rinse your hair. Use very warm water for this and rinse your hair for at least three minutes. You need to make sure you got all the lotion out of your hair.
  4. Dry your hair and apply neutralizer. Blot any excess water from your hair. If necessary, squeeze your hair in the towel. However, don't rub your hair dry as this can cause damage.Once your hair is dry, apply the neutralizer from the kit. Repeat the procedure as with the golf lotion. When you are done, rinse the neutralizer with very warm water. Rinsing out the neutralizer takes longer than rinsing out the wave lotion (waving lotion). You have to rinse for at least five minutes.
  5. Take care of your hair afterwards. When you're done with the neutralizer, pat your hair dry again. If the process was successful, you should now have straightened hair and less permanent.
    • The products used in perm kits can be stressful for the hair. Make sure to use conditioner if you shower after this method. This will replenish lost moisture in the hair, revitalize your hair and prevent further damage. Even if you don't use shampoo, you should still apply conditioner every day for about a week.

Method 3 of 3: Using a gel

  1. Find the right gel for your hair. Certain gels can help straighten your hair. Like a flat iron, they only temporarily remove curls. Take some time to choose the right gel for your hair.
    • Keep in mind that gels don't work for some people, and they may not produce the results you want. Gels alone will usually not remove the curls.
    • Ask your stylist to recommend a gel for straightening your hair. He or she will have the best idea of what would work on your hair, given its type and length.
    • You can also read reviews of gels online. Websites such as Amazon allow users to leave reviews. Beauty or hair care websites often provide product reviews.
    • Read any warnings on the products you are looking at before purchasing. Some gels may not be recommended for permed, dyed, or otherwise styled hair.
  2. Wash and condition your hair. Use a gentle shampoo and smoothing conditioner as this will help straighten the hair. Straightening the hair can damage your hair, so high quality products will help minimize the damage. When you are done, pat your hair dry with a towel.
  3. Add a little bit of gel to your hair. After your hair dries, add a little bit of gel to your hair. Work the lotion evenly into your hair from root to tip. Don't use too much gel as this can make your hair limp.
  4. Brush your hair smooth while you blow-dry. Once you've added the gel, it's time to blow dry your hair. You can brush your hair while blow drying to aid straightening.
    • Use a round brush. Run it through your hair and straighten your hair while blow drying.
    • If your hair is thick and takes a long time to dry, alternate between warm and cold settings on your hairdryer. This can prevent damage to the hair.
  5. Clip your hair if necessary. If you have particularly thick or long hair, you may need to divide your hair into sections with clips while drying. Take the top half of your hair and attach it to the top of your hair with a bun or hair clip. Dry the bottom of your hair first. When you are done, loosen the top layer of the hair and dry that part.
