"Breezehome" is one of the houses in Skyrim that the player can purchase. It is the first house to buy when following the main storyline and provides a safe place to store and rearm the loot in between forays to Whiterun Hold. Breezehome can be purchased for 5000 Gold after completing the “Bleak Falls Barrow” quest in the main storyline.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Finishing up "Bleak Falls Barrow"

  1. Start the "Bleak Falls Barrow" quest. This quest is part of the main storyline in Skyrim and you get the quest of Farengar Secret-Fire in Dragonsreach in Whiterun. This quest immediately follows the quest “Before the Storm”.
    • Note: You can make things a lot easier on yourself by traveling to Bleak Falls Barrow before you even get to Whiterun. You can start the "Golden Claw" quest by talking to Lucan Valerius in Riverwood. This will allow you to retrieve all the objects you need from Bleak Falls Barrow and give them to Farengar Secret-Fire as soon as you get the quest, without having to retrace your steps.
  2. Travel to Bleak Falls Barrow. You can find this “dungeon” south of Whiterun and west of Riverwood. There will be some bandits outside, so you will want to get rid of them before entering. You will find the entrance to Bleak Falls Barrow at the top of the stairs, in the ruins.
  3. Kill the two bandits in the first room and then proceed. You'll soon encounter a bandit who pulls the wrong lever, triggering a trap that kills him.
  4. Place the pillars properly. You can look at the carvings above the gate to determine what order they should be in. Set them to “snake”, “snake” and “whale”. This will allow you to pull the lever and move on.
  5. Free Arvel and then kill him. You will find Arvel the Swift trapped in a spider web further up the “dungeon”. By hacking the spider web you will free him and he will run away. Now try to kill him so that you can easily get to his body. If you don't kill him, he will either be killed by a draug, a little further down, or impaled by a nail trap.
    • Arvel will shrink for a moment after he is freed from the spider web. Therefore, now is the best time to kill him.
  6. Get the Golden Claw and use it to solve the puzzle. You will find this object on Arvel's corps. The Golden Claw is needed to pass the Three-Rings puzzle further down the “dungeon”. If you zoom in on the palm of the Golden Claw in your inventory, you will be shown the correct order in which the rings should be (from top to bottom: bear, hummingbird, owl).
  7. Read the Word Wall and beat the draugr. The Word Wall will teach you Unrelenting Shout, one of the most useful Shouts in the game. After reading the Word Wall you will be attacked by a draugr overlord. Defeat the draugr and take the dragonstone.
  8. Give the Dragonstone to Farengar Secret-Fire in Dragonsreach in Whiterun. This will complete the quest and allow you to buy a house in Whiterun.

Part 2 of 3: Buying the house

  1. Talk to the Jarl. Talk to the Jarl in Dragonsreach after completing the quest. He will tell you that there is now a house available to buy and direct you to Proventus Avenicci.
  2. Find Proventus Avenicci in Whiterun. You can usually find him close to the throne in Dragonsreach. When he's not there, he's either in his bedroom or eating in the great hall.
    • If you haven't bought the house yet when you start the "Battle for Whiterun" quest for the Stormcloaks, you will need to buy the house from Brill in Dragonsreach afterwards.
  3. Buy the house for 5000 Gold. Proventus will sell the house to you if you can cough up the 5000 Gold payment. If you don't have the money yet, you can raid a few nearby “dungeons” and sell the loot to the traders in Whiterun.
  4. Buy furniture from Proventus. Your house will be quite bare in the beginning when you buy it, but you can add extra furniture and decorations by buying them from Proventus. When you buy extra furniture, it will automatically be placed in your house.
    • You can buy the furniture per room. For example, furnishing your living room gives you 2 weapon racks, 1 bookshelf, 1 cupboard, 1 small table and 2 small chairs. Decorating the bedroom gives you 3 side tables, 1 dresser, 1 table, 1 chest, 2 chairs and a place where you can attach a shield to the wall.
  5. Find your new home. After you buy your house you will be given the key and you can start using it. The house's name is “Breezehome” and you can find it east of “Warmaiden’s”, just inside the western gates of Whiterun.

Part 3 of 3: Using your home

  1. Store items safely in your boxes. Throughout Skyrim, many Chests will reset after a while, making them an unsafe place to store valuables for later. Chests in your house will never reset, however, so you can safely dispose of all your excess loot in between adventures.
    • Many players will put different categories of items in different chests to make finding items easier later on. For example, you could put your clothes and armor in the chests in your bedroom, while keeping all your ingredients in the kitchen.
    • The weapon you are equipped with will automatically be placed in the weapon racks when you use it. Making them a great way to show off your most loved weapons.
  2. Upgrade your kitchen to cook ingredients and make food. By upgrading your kitchen you get a cooking pot. You can use this jar to combine food ingredients to make more effective and powerful food.
    • Most foods require salt as an ingredient.
  3. Upgrade your alchemy lab to brew potions. The alchemy lab allows you to use ingredients to brew very powerful potions. You can combine up to three ingredients (two basic and a bonus) to create a wide variety of beneficial potions and devastating poisons. The alchemy lab is the most expensive outbuilding, with a price of 500 Gold. Click here for a drink brewing guide.
    • If you have the "Hearthfire" expansion you can replace your alchemy lab with a children's bedroom. This gives you the opportunity to adopt children to live with you. Click here for more details on adopting in Skyrim.
  4. Make good use of the nearby blacksmith shop. One of the best features of Breezehome is its proximity to Warmaiden's. This means you can quickly forge and repair your equipment without having to find all the right tools.
  5. Know what you can't do in Breezehome. Breezehome does not have an “Enchanting Table” or a mannequin. This means that you cannot enchant objects without having to walk all the way to Dragonsreach first. Without the mannequin, you cannot display your favorite pieces of armor. Breezehome is also quite a distance from the Thieves Guild dealer at Honningbrew Meadery.
