E-mail is simply one of the best ways to communicate in this digital age. It ensures that people can easily communicate with each other, both socially and professionally; but in order to read your e-mail, you will have to be able to open it first, regardless of the e-mail program you use. It is important that you first open an account with an email provider. If you need to create an account first, you can find more information here.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Opening an email on your computer

  1. Go to your email provider's website.
  2. Log in to your e-mail account.
  3. Click on “Inbox”. A list of emails that have arrived in the recent or more distant past will appear. In general, the sender and subject will be displayed so that you know who sent the email and what it is about.
  4. Click on one of your emails. The email will open in full screen or in a smaller window. Should the email be opened in full screen, a “back button” or arrow will usually be indicated on the left, allowing you to return to the previous screen. This will return you to the list of emails (your “inbox”).
    • Under the button “Inbox” you will usually find a number of other folders. For example, you can open the "Sent Mail" folder and then view an email that you sent to someone else. The “Drafts” folder refers to emails you have started, but have not yet sent. Depending on your email provider, you may have different email folders.

Method 2 of 4: Using iOS

  1. Open "Settings" and click on "Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. Tap on “Add Account. Here you will find the options “iCloud,” “Exchange,” “Google,” “Yahoo,” “AOL.” and “Outlook”. If your email account is one from this list, click on the appropriate email account. If your email account is not in this list, click "Other" and then "Add Account."
  3. Enter your name. This will be sent with every email, so if you are using this account for professional purposes, make sure to choose a business name, or one that matches how you are known to the recipients of your email .
  4. Enter your email address. This should be the email address you want to use on your mobile.
  5. Enter your password. This is the password associated with the email address you just entered.
  6. Enter a description. The description allows you to know which email you are opening. For example, you can call it "work" if it is a business account or "gmail" if it is your personal Gmail account.
  7. Tap “Next” in the top right corner of the screen. Your account will then be checked.
  8. Press the home button to return to the main screen. Tap the Mail app. The new account will now be displayed with the description you have chosen. Tap the name of your account.
  9. Tap a name in the list that appears. You have now opened an email message. Now to return to the email list, tap “Inbox” in the top left corner of the screen. Every time you tap on a sender, you will open the corresponding email.

Method 3 of 4: Using Android to access email from other accounts

  1. Open the Email (or Mail) app and choose “Set up a New Account.
  2. Enter the email address you want to use and the corresponding password. Click on "Next." The mobile will now check your email settings. If you have a Yahoo or Hotmail account, this will be arranged relatively quickly.
    • If the mobile cannot find the settings of your account, you will see a number of advanced settings. First, choose an account type such as IMAP, POP3 or Exchange. Exchange is mostly used for corporate accounts, and IMAP or POP3 mostly for general accounts. IMAP is usually recommended by email providers, but check with your own provider for specific preferences.
    • After choosing the account type, enter the “Incoming server settings” and then the “Outgoing server settings”. Again, consult your own provider for the specific settings of the server.
  3. Select your options for the account. A list of options will appear that you can enable or disable as desired. Click “Next” when you are done.
    • Enabling “Send e-mail from this account by default” makes this e-mail account the default e-mail address. Every email that is sent uses this address.
    • Check “Notify me when e-mail arrives” if you want to be notified of every incoming e-mail. This can drain your battery quickly and will consume your data limit, because your mobile periodically checks if you have new e-mail. You can also click the top bar above these options to change the frequency of the checks.
    • Check “Sync e-mail from this account” to automatically synchronize your e-mail. This allows you to back up your data.
    • Check “Automatically download attachments when connected to WiFi” to automatically download attachments when opening your email. This is usually useful, except if your internet connection is very slow, or if you are using an insecure, public Wi-Fi network while you want to view sensitive information.
  4. Give the account a clear description. This could be something like "Yahoo Email." It is useful to give each account its own, clear name.
  5. Enter your name. It can be seen above every email you send, so keep it professional when it comes to business email. Click on “Next” and your e-mail account will be added to your mobile.
  6. Tap your new account in your Mail app. Then tap the email you want to read to open it. To return to your emails, click the back arrow at the bottom of the screen.

Method 4 of 4: Using Android to access Gmail

  1. Open “Settings” and scroll down to “Accounts.Tap "Add Account."
    • Since Android is from Google, it uses a specific Gmail app and not the Email app.
  2. Tap “Google. Then click on "Existing."
  3. Enter your Google email and password. Tap “OK” to agree to the terms of use. You will be signed into your account.
    • You may be asked to join Google+ or Google Play. Just check or uncheck the options as desired.
  4. Tap an email to open and read it. You can return to your email list by tapping the back arrow in the bottom bar.
