Buying a whole pineapple is an inexpensive way to get enough vitamin C.Pineapple juice and the pulp of the pineapple can be used to tenderize meat or you can make a sauce for your dessert. You can also eat the pineapple fresh. Peeling a pineapple can seem tricky because the skin is so thick. However, you can follow the method below to remove the skin and eyes before cutting the pineapple further.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Choosing a pineapple

  1. Grab the pineapple. Smell at the bottom. The underside should have a slight sweet scent.
  2. Push your fingers against the pineapple skin. When the pineapple is ripe, the skin should give slightly.
  3. Wash the skin of the pineapple and let the fruit dry before getting started. You will be removing most of the peel later, so you don't have to scrub as hard.

Part 2 of 3: Peel off the skin

  1. Place the pineapple on your cutting board. You need a very sharp chef's knife to properly peel the pineapple.
  2. Place the pineapple on its side. Hold the knife about half an inch below the leaves. Cut until you get to the leaves.
  3. Flip the pineapple over and cut it again until you have cut away the top of the pineapple and most of the leaves in a circle. Hold the piece by the top leaves and throw it away. You can use the remaining leaves in the center to hold the pineapple tightly while cutting.
    • Some chefs recommend cutting off the entire top. You can do this too, but be careful not to let your hand slide off the top of the pineapple. When cutting the pineapple, a lot of sticky juice comes out of the fruit.
  4. Start at the top of the pineapple and cut through the skin until you reach the bottom. You can also cut a little round to keep more pulp.
  5. Turn the pineapple clockwise about 5 to 10 inches and repeat the previous step. Turn the fruit, cut away the skin and repeat the process until you have cut away the entire skin and you only have to remove the eyes.
  6. Place the pineapple on its side and cut the bottom off horizontally.
    • Dispose of the pineapple peel on the compost pile or in the green container.

Part 3 of 3: Remove the eyes and finish the job

  1. Hold the pineapple upright and observe how the eyes are arranged in diagonal lines. By only cutting away the eyes you will have as much pulp as possible.
  2. Hold the blade to the left of a diagonal line of eyes. Slice the pineapple at a 45 degree angle just below the eyes.
  3. Hold the knife to the right of the same diagonal line. Slice the pineapple at a 45 degree angle in the opposite direction. When you cut into the pineapple this way you will be able to remove the line of eyes. Most of the sweet flesh is retained.
  4. Work from the top diagonal line to the bottom diagonal line, making parallel grooves in the flesh. It should start to look like a spiral.
  5. Turn the pineapple a quarter and repeat the process. When you have cut out the eyes on all sides, you have a beautiful spiral pattern and bright yellow flesh.
  6. Cut the pineapple vertically into four parts. Remove the center of the pineapple by cutting vertically. The middle part is hard and not very sweet.
  7. Cut the rest of the pineapple into pieces.

Tips

  • Peeling a pineapple is something you have to practice. However, you can do it quickly once you have mastered cropping the eyes. In most tropical countries, they peel pineapples the same way.
  • An easy way to remove the green top is to hold the bottom in one hand and the top in the other. Turn the bottom and the top will come off. You can pull off the bottom leaves, which will reveal small roots. You can plant and grow the section about 2 to 3 inches deep in soil. It takes about two years to grow an edible pineapple. In the meantime, you have a beautiful plant in your home.
