To use your Wii Remote to play with your Wii or Wii U, you must first sync it with the console. Knowing how to do this can be helpful if your friends are bringing their Wii Remotes to play with. You can also sync Wii remotes with your computer for use with the Dolphin emulator.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Sync with a Wii

  1. Turn on the Wii and make sure no programs are running.
  2. Remove the back cover from the Wii remote.
  3. Slide down the SD card cover on the front of the Wii. If you're using a Wii Mini, the sync button is on the left side of the console, near the battery compartment.
  4. Press and then release the sync button on the back of the Wii remote. This is located under the battery holder. The LED lights on the Wii Remote will blink.
  5. Quickly press the sync button on the Wii while the lights on the remote are flashing.
  6. Wait for lights to stop blinking. If the lights on the Wii Remote stay on, the remote has successfully synced.

Troubleshooting

  1. Make sure no other programs are running. The Wii may not sync while a game is running or you are using a channel. Make sure the Wii is in the main menu when you sync.
    • If you still cannot sync, remove game discs from the system completely.
  2. Make sure the Wii remote has sufficient power. The Wii Remote uses AA batteries and may not sync if there is insufficient power. Try replacing the batteries and see if that fixes the problem.
  3. Remove the power cable from the back of the Wii and wait approx. 20 seconds. Then plug the cable back in and turn on the Wii. This will reset the Wii and may fix the issues.
  4. Make sure the sensor bar is above or below your TV. The sensor bar ensures that you can point things out on your TV screen with your Wii remote. It works best when it is below or above the TV screen.
  5. Reset the Wii Remote by removing the batteries, waiting 1 minute, then replacing the batteries and synchronizing again.

Method 2 of 3: Sync with a Wii U

  1. Turn on the Wii U and make sure it is on the main menu.
    • If you try to launch Wii Mode without syncing your Wii Remote, you will be prompted to sync first.
  2. Press and hold the sync button on the front of the Wii U until the sync screen appears.
  3. Remove the back cover from the Wii remote.
  4. Press the sync button on the back of the Wii remote. It is located under the battery holder. The LED lights on the Wii Remote will blink and then stay on to indicate a good connection.
