When Grand Theft Auto V came out, it quickly became one of the hottest games of the year for good reason. In addition to the thrill of stealing cars and crazy robberies, the player can explore the "open world" in a number of different ways. You can play golf, go to a bar or just drive along the beach. You can even go for a swim, in your own pool or in the sea.

To step

  1. Find a place to swim. Since GTA V is set in a place based in California, it is not difficult to find such a place. If you play as Michael, you can practice swimming in your own backyard. If you'd like to swim in a more public place, there are a number of lakes that feed the rivers and are open to the public.
    • There is a large lake in the center of the Tataviam Mountains. This mountain range is located to the northeast and a short distance from Los Santos.
    • North of Los Santos is another large lake, in the middle of Vinewood.
    • Besides the ocean, the largest body of water is the Alamo Sea, which feeds a number of small rivers. The Alamo Sea is located west of Sandy Shores.

Tip: The world in which GTA V is set is surrounded by water on all sides, so if you walk long enough in any direction, you will eventually reach the ocean.

  2. Enter the water. You can just walk into the water. As soon as the water rises above your character's head, he / she will tread water.
  3. Start swimming. While on the surface, use the left lever (PS3 / PS4, Xbox 360 / Xbox One) or, on the PC, use the WASD buttons to swim forward, backward, left, and right.
    • The WASD keys on the PC move your character as follows: your character moves with W forward, with S backward, with A to the left, and with D to the right.
  4. Swim faster. To swim faster, repeatedly press the X button (PS3 / PS4), A button (Xbox 360 / Xbox One), or the Shift button (PC).
  5. Dive underwater. You make your character dive underwater by pressing the R1 button (PS3), RB button (Xbox 360) or the Space bar (PC).
  6. Swim underwater. To swim forward underwater, press X (PS3 / PS4), A (Xbox 360 / Xbox One) or Left Shift (PC). Your character's controls are reversed underwater (just like airplane controls). To swim up and to surface, push the left lever down and hold X (PS3 / PS4), or A (Xbox 360 / Xbox One) or hold S and Left Shift (PC). To dive deeper, push the left lever up and press X (PS3 / PS4), or A (Xbox 360 / Xbox One), or press W and Left Shift (PC) at the same time. You can move left or right by pressing the left lever to the left or right respectively, or, if playing on PC, by pressing the A and D buttons respectively.
  7. Attack while swimming. In the water you can only use a knife. In case you need to defend yourself against sharks, you can pick up the knife by pressing the L1 button (PS3 / PS4), LB button (Xbox 360 / Xbox One) or Tab button (PC). Once you hold the blade, attack by pressing the Circle button (PS3 / PS4), the B button (Xbox 360 / Xbox One), or the R button (PC).
    • You can attack underwater and if you are treading water on the surface.
  8. Check your health. You can't stay underwater forever. On the screen, you can see a light blue meter in the lower left corner, next to your character's life meter. This gauge indicates how long your character can stay underwater. Once the light blue meter is empty, your character's health will plummet rapidly. If you don't reach the surface before the life meter is depleted, your character will die.
