Elbow width is a factor in determining your body type. It can be used in conjunction with your height to determine what your ideal weight range could be. You can measure the width of your elbow yourself, but it is easier to ask someone to help you.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Gather your resources

  1. Take a tape measure or ruler.
  2. Ask a friend to help you measure for an accurate reading.
  3. Stand in front of the mirror if you are going to measure yourself. You can then monitor whether you are adopting the correct posture.

Part 2 of 3: Measure the width of the elbow

  1. Stand up straight. Grab your dominant arm and hold it straight in front of you. It should be horizontal and parallel to the ground.
  2. Bend your elbow. Your forearm should be at a 90-degree angle, with your thumb facing your face. Your upper arm remains in the same position.
  3. Open your thumb and your index finger, as if you were going to squeeze something. Place your thumb at the inner bone of your elbow. Place your index finger at the outer bone of your elbow.
    • Your fingers should be on the other side of your elbow at about the same height.
    • Consider using a caliper instead of your fingers for a more accurate reading. Hold the caliper at a 45 degree angle to the elbow.
  4. Gently squeeze so that the measurement is taken close to the skin, but do not push the skin in.
  5. Make sure that the distance between your thumb and forefinger remains the same. Place your thumb at the start of the ruler or tape measure.
  6. Measure the distance between your thumb and index finger to the nearest millimeter. This is the width of your elbow.

Part 3 of 3: Using a physique calculator

  1. Search online for a frame size calculator. Just type in “frame size calculator” in a good search engine and click on one of the first links.
  2. Enter whether you want the measurement to be in US standard feet and inches or metric measurements.
  3. Select your gender.
  4. Type the width of your elbow.
  5. Enter your height. Click on the place outside the fields with your cursor. Now the form will be updated.
  6. Look at the bottom to find out if you have a small, medium, or large body type. Find out what your ideal weight is on the line below your body type.
