Do you want to turn up your subwoofer? Adjusting the bass on a computer can be a bit confusing as there are different options for different hardware. In many cases you only have the option to adjust the volume. If so, you can install system utilities that give you more options for customizing your sound.

Method 1 of 3: Windows

1. Check if you can set the bass with your sound card. On Windows, you'll find the bass level on the left side of the Volume Mixer software. If you cannot change the bass level you can proceed to Step 2.
   • Click on the volume button. This button can be found in the system bar, in the lower right corner of your screen.
   • Click on the icon of your speakers or headphones. That's at the top of the volume slider.
   • Look for a bass slider. Maybe bass balance is included here. Your sound card must support this functionality or you won't find the option. Check both the Levels and Advanced tabs.
   • You may not hear the changes until you click Apply.
2. Turn on Bass enhancement. You should still be in the "Properties" window. Click the Adjustments tab and select the box next to "Bass enhancement". This will make the bass tones relatively louder.
   • Click Settings .. if you selected "Bass enhancement". Here you can set the frequency and degree of bass amplification.
   • Do it in small steps. If you amplify the low tones a lot in one go, you can damage your speakers. Check the specifications of your speakers to check the supported frequencies. Click Apply to verify the changes.
   • If you still cannot adjust the bass to your liking, you can continue with Step 3.
3. Download "Equalizer APO". This is a small program that allows you to adjust the sound of your computer. It is open source and the system requirements are very low, so you can use it even if you use programs that require a lot of your computer.
   • You can download Equalizer APO from SourceForge.
   • Equalizer APO requires Windows Vista or newer.
   • Download the correct version for your system depending on whether your version of Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
4. Download an interface for Equalizer APO. Equalizer APO is a so-called "command-line program", which can make it difficult to use quickly and efficiently. There are several graphical interfaces available for it that you can download for free. "Peace" is one of the most popular interfaces for Equalizer APO.
   • You can find a link to the Peace download page on Equalizer APO's SourceForge page.
5. Install Equalizer APO. Click on the file and follow the instructions.
6. Select your audio device. During installation you will need to specify your primary audio device.
   • If you are not sure what your primary audio device is, open the Control Panel and then "Sound". The default device is your primary audio device.
7. Restart your computer after installation. Now your new system equalizer will be activated.
   • The system volume may be slightly lower after you set Equalizer APO. You can easily restore this after installing the equalizer.
8. Open the folder .config from Equalizer APO. You will find this in "Program components".
   • The default location is C: Program Files EqualizerAPO config
9. Copy the file Peace.exe to the folder.config. Now the Peace interface can change the settings of Equalizer APO.
10. Right-click on the Peace.exe file and select Create Shortcut. Move the shortcut to your desktop so that you can open the program easily.

Method 2 of 3: Mac OS X

1. Download and install Soundflower and AU Lab. OS X does not include options to adjust the bass yourself. You will need to download special software to control an equalizer that allows you to adjust the sound of the entire system.
   • Soundflower can be downloaded for free from Google Code.
   • AU Lab is available for download from Apple, but requires a free "Developer ID" from Apple.
   • Restart your computer after installing both programs.
2. Set your system volume to maximum. You do this by sliding the volume knob in the menu bar or by using the buttons on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences".
4. Click on "Sound" and select the "Output" tab.
5. Select "Soundflower (2ch)" from the list of output options.
6. Start AU Lab. This program can be found in the "Utilities" folder.
7. Click the "Audio Input Device" drop-down menu. Select "Soundflower (2ch)".
8. Click the "Audio Output Device" drop-down menu. Select "Stereo In / Stereo Out".
9. Click on "Create Document".
10. Click the "Effects" drop-down menu in the "Output 1" column. Select "AUGraphicEQ".
11. Adjust the equalizer settings as desired. It can be helpful to have a song or video playing while setting up the bass.
12. Save your equalizer settings. Press ⌘ Cmd+S. and select a location for the settings file.
13. Click on the "AU Lab" menu and select "Preferences". Click the "Document" tab and select "Open a specific document". Select the file you just created.
14. Right-click on the AU Lab icon in the "Utilities" folder. Select Options → Open with login
    • AU Lab must be on for the equalizer to work.

Method 3 of 3: Using program-related equalizers

1. Use program related equalizers. Many media players have an equalizer option built in with which you can adjust the bass. How you open the equalizer differs per program.
   • Windows Media Player - Click the "Switch to Now Playing" button at the bottom right of Media Player. Right-click on an empty spot in the program. Select "Adjustments" and click "Graphic Equalizer". Use the sliders on the left to adjust the bass.
   • iTunes - Click on the "Window" menu and select "Equalizer". Check the box next to "On". Use the sliders on the left to adjust the bass.
   • VLC Player - Click on the "Window" menu and select "Audio Effects ...". You can also press Ctrl+E. Click the Equalizer tab if it is not already open. Check the box next to "Enable". Use the sliders on the left to adjust the bass.

Tips

• Different sound cards have different options and functionalities. Research the possibilities of your sound card online if you want to be able to adjust the bass.
