• What do you need

1 Make an open loop in the middle of the rope. Roll it twice to make two loops, one above the other. Make the top loop a little larger.

2 Lower the upper loop under the lower one, folding it at the junction of the two loops. Now the bottom loop must be inside the first loop.

3 Take the farthest edge of the bottom loop (first loop) and pull it through the second smaller loop.

4 Tighten. The ends will tighten on their own while you tighten the knot.

• This knot has other names as well: Austrian Guide, Middle Guide, Alpine Bloodworm, Middle Knot and Riding Loop.
