In this article, we are going to show you how to enter characters in a text box on a computer or smartphone.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Windows
1 Open the start menu
. Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen.
2 Find the Symbol Table. Enter table in the start menu search bar.
3 Click on table of symbols. This option will appear at the top of the Start menu. The "Symbol Table" window opens.
4 Choose a common font. Click the Font menu at the top of the Character Map window, and then choose a common font from the menu (for example, Arial).
- Do this because less common fonts contain characters that some programs do not support.
5 Find the symbol you want. Scroll through the list of symbols to find the symbol you want.
6 Select a symbol. To do this, click on it. The symbol will enlarge slightly.
7 Click on Choose. This button is at the bottom of the window. The symbol is added to the To Copy text box.
8 Click on Copy. This button is in the push-right corner. The symbol will be copied to the clipboard.
9 Insert a symbol. Open a document or web page with a text box, and then click Ctrl+Vto insert a character.
Method 2 of 4: macOS
1 Open a document or web page with a text box. To enter a character on a Mac, you first need to open an application, document, or web page with a text box.
2 Place your cursor. Click where you want to enter the character in the document.
3 Click on Change. You will find this option at the top of the screen. A menu will open.
- You can also click Control+⌘ Command+Space and skip the next step.
4 Click on Emoji and symbols. It's at the bottom of the menu. The Emoji & Symbols window will open.
5 Click on ⌘. This icon is in the upper right corner of the window. A new window will open with categories of symbols.
- Skip this step if you already see symbol categories in the left pane of the window.
6 Select a symbol category. To do this, click on the desired category on the left panel.
- For example, to enter a currency icon, click on Currency Symbols in the left pane.
7 Find the symbol you want. To do this, scroll through the list of symbols and find the desired symbol in it.
8 Double click on the desired symbol. It will appear where the cursor is.
Method 3 of 4: iPhone

4 Click on #+=. This button is on the lower left side of the keyboard. It will switch from numeric to symbolic.
5 Select a symbol. Tap the character you want and it will appear in the text box or document.
- If the symbol you want is not there, press and hold the similar symbol to display its options. For example, press and hold a question mark to open a menu with an inverted question mark. To enter a character from such a menu, slide your finger up to select the character, and then remove your finger from the screen.
