This article will show you how to print documents in black and white with an Epson printer. On a Windows computer and Mac OS X, you can set all documents to be printed in black and white by default, or only certain documents can be printed this way. Please note that not all Epson printers support black and white printing.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: How to Change the Default Settings in Windows

1. 1 Open the start menu . Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. 2 Enter Control Panel. This will search for the Control Panel utility.
3. 3 Click on Control Panel. It's a blue square icon at the top of the Start menu. The Control Panel will open.
4. 4 Click on Devices and Printers. It's on the right side of the Control Panel window.
   • If the information in the Control Panel window is displayed by category, click View devices and printers under Hardware and Sound.
5. 5 Find your printer. Typically, it is marked with the word "Epson" and the printer model number. Printers appear at the bottom of the page, so scroll down to the bottom.
6. 6 Right click on the printer name. A dropdown menu will open.
   • If the mouse does not have a right button, click on the right side of the mouse or click on it with two fingers.
   • If your computer has a trackpad (instead of a mouse), tap it with two fingers or press the lower-right portion of the trackpad.
7. 7 Click on Print setup. It's in the drop-down menu. The "Printing Preferences" window will open.
8. 8 Go to the tab Colour. It's at the top of the window.
9. 9 Check the box next to Black & White or Gray. Typically, this option (or menu) is located in the middle of the page.
   • If this option is not listed on the Color tab, go to the Paper / Quality tab and look for either Black and White or Gray.
   • If you cannot find the specified option, it is likely that your Epson printer does not support black and white printing.
10. 10 Click on Apply. This button is at the bottom of the window.
11. 11 Click on OK. This button is at the bottom of the window. The settings are saved and the Printing Preferences window closes.
12. 12 Print your document. Open the document or web page that you want to print, and then click Ctrl+P... Select your printer (if not already selected), review other print options (if necessary), and click OK.
    • You can also click File> Print in most programs.

Method 2 of 3: How to Change the Default Settings in Mac OS X

1. 1 Open Spotlight . Click on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the screen. The search bar will open.
2. 2 Enter terminal. The search for the Terminal program will start.
3. 3 Double click on "Terminal" . You will find this program at the top of the search results. Terminal will open.
4. 4 Run the printer settings command. Enter cupsctl WebInterface = yes and press ⏎ Return... Wait for the command to finish.
5. 5 Go to Local Host 631 page. Open your web browser, enter http: // localhost: 631 / in the address bar of your browser and click ⏎ Return.
6. 6 Click on Printers (Printers). This tab is in the upper-right side of the page.
7. 7 Select the 'Set Default Options' option. To do this, open the menu located on the far right below the printer name and select the specified option.
8. 8 Click on Administration (Control). It's a tab at the top of the page.
   • You may be taken to this tab automatically when you select the "Set defaults" option.
9. 9 Scroll down to the Basic section. You will find it directly under the printer name.
10. 10 Change the "Output Color" setting. Open the Output Color, Color, or Color Mode menu and select Black, Black & White, or Grayscale (Grey).
    • The name of this menu and option depends on the printer model.
    • If you cannot find the Black or Black and White option, your printer does not support black and white printing.
11. 11 Click on Set Default Options (Set default parameters). It's near the bottom of the General section. The settings are saved and take effect for the Epson printer.
    • You may be prompted for an administrative username and password. This is usually the username and password with which you log in.
12. 12 Print your document. Open the document or web page that you want to print, and then click Ctrl+P... Select your printer (if not already selected), review other print options (if necessary), and click OK.
    • You can also click File> Print in most programs.

Method 3 of 3: How to manually set up black and white printing

1. 1 Open the document or web page that you want to print. Print is available in most programs on Windows and Mac OS X computers.
2. 2 Open the Print menu. To do this, click Ctrl+P (Windows) or ⌘ Command+P (Mac).
   • You can also click File> Print in most programs.
3. 3 Select your Epson printer. Open the Printer menu (at the top of the Print window) and select your Epson printer.
4. 4 Click on Properties or Parameters. Typically, this button is at the top of the Print window.
   • On your Mac, open the Copies & Pages menu and choose the Paper / Quality option. You may need to click Show Details to display this menu.
5. 5 Check the box next to Black & White or Gray.
   • On a Windows computer, go to the Advanced or Color tab first.
6. 6 Click on OK. This button is at the bottom of the window. The document will be printed in black and white.

Tips

• If the interface of any program does not allow you to understand how to set up black and white printing, read the (online) instructions for this program.

Warnings

• Be aware that Epson printers use a small amount of ink from all cartridges (including color), even when printing in black and white. This is necessary to keep the cartridges in good working order. If possible (for your Epson model), remove the color ink cartridges before printing black and white documents - this will save color ink.
• Not all printers support black and white printing.
