In order for your car's automatic transmission to last longer, you need to regularly change the fluid in it. There are two ways to do this: using a special apparatus or manually. It is necessary to change the fluid with the help of the apparatus every 80,000 kilometers, while changing the fluid manually every 16,000 kilometers. The exact numbers should be listed in the manual for your machine.

Steps

  1. 1 You will need to raise the car so you can crawl under it. If you do not have a dedicated hydraulic lift, you can use jacks for this.
  2. 2 Climb under the car and find the transmission fluid pan. It will be attached to the bottom of the transmission with six or eight bolts.
  3. 3 Drain the liquid. This can be done in two ways. Just keep in mind that they will not help you drain all the liquid. About 50 percent will still remain inside the transmission. To remove all fluid (including the fluid in the torque converter), you will have to do this with a special apparatus.
    • If the pan has a drain plug, remove it to drain the liquid into a separate container. Use a ten-liter bucket for this. Just keep in mind that if you decide to use this method, then you will not be able to replace the transmission fluid filter. This can only be done if you remove the pallet.
  4. 4 Remove the pallet. If there is no drain hole in the pallet, then you will have to remove it.
    • Unscrew the two upper bolts halfway. Unscrew the rest of the bolts completely. As soon as you unscrew the last bolt, the edge of the pallet will move slightly away from the body and liquid will begin to flow from it. If the pallet is firmly attached to the machine, tap it with a rubber mallet.
    • To drain the liquid, you will need dishes that are at least as wide as a pan so that the oil does not spill on the floor.
    • Change the transmission fluid filter after removing the pan. Just take it out. Then don't forget to install a new filter!
    • Most pallets have a magnet to which metal particles formed when moving parts work. The pallet will need to be cleaned from them.
    • Check the gasket. It will probably need to be replaced.
    • Place the pallet back.
  5. 5 Lower the jacks.
  6. 6 Pour in new fluid. There are several types of transmission fluid. You must use the correct fluid recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. You will find the necessary information in the user manual.
    • Remove the transmission fluid dipstick. The liquid will need to be poured directly into the hole where the dipstick is located.
    • You will need to use a funnel for this. Pour in a little less liquid than you drained so as not to overfill.
  7. 7 Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then turn it off and check the fluid level. If the level is low, then you need to pour in a little more liquid. Repeat the procedure until the liquid is at the desired level.

Tips

  • Find a dedicated place where you can dispose of the drained oil before you start changing it. Take care of the environment.

Warnings

  • Manual transmission fluid is changed differently. This article is for automatic boxes.
  • Changing the transmission fluid can extend the life of your transmission, even if the fluid is still red. If the fluid is dark red or brown and smells burnt, then you will need to flush the transmission completely.
