You can restore Google contacts if they were accidentally deleted or changed. To do this, log into your Google account, open your contact list, select a restore point and confirm the recovery. After that, it's a good idea to keep a copy of your contact list in a separate location. The contact list can be restored to any point in time in the previous 30 days, so if too much time passes after making any changes, the restore may fail.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Recover Google Contacts

  1. 1 Open up Google Contacts and log into your google account. Enter your Google email address and password, then click Sign In. You will be taken to the contact page of your account.
    • You can also get to this page by opening your mail and choosing "Contacts" from the "Gmail" menu, which is located in the upper left corner of the page.
  2. 2 Click on the "Restore contacts" button. This option is located on the left sidebar and opens a new window with a choice of a restore point.
    • If you don't see this option, click the More button in the left sidebar to expand the menu. By default, the menu should already be expanded.
  3. 3 Select a restore point from the list. Select the interval when changes to the contact list have not yet been made (for example, if the changes were made yesterday, you must select the recovery period at least 2 days earlier).
    • If you do not want to use standard restore points, you can specify the period yourself, but this will not cancel the limitation of the previous 30 days.
  4. 4 Click on the "Restore" button. It is located at the very bottom of the recovery wizard window and will return your contacts as of the selected recovery period.

Method 2 of 3: Export contacts

  1. 1 Open up Google Contacts and log into your google account. Enter your email address and password and then click "Login". You will be taken to the contact page of your account.
  2. 2 Click Export. This button is located on the left side panel.
    • Export is currently not supported in the preview version of Google Contacts (which opens by default), so you will be redirected to the legacy version of Google Contacts.
  3. 3 Open the More menu and select Export. This menu is just below the search bar. A new window with export settings will open.
  4. 4 Configure export options. All contacts will be exported by default. In addition, you can export both individual groups and individual contacts.
    • To export only specific contacts, you must separately mark each contact that you want to export before you select Export.
  5. 5 Select the file format to export. Google CSV is a format for importing to another Google account (the best choice for a Google account backup). If you often use Microsoft or Apple products, you can choose Outlook CSV or vCard.
  6. 6 Click Export. Then the save dialog box will appear.
  7. 7 Select a save path and click the "Save" button. A file with a copy of your current Google contacts will be saved in the selected location.

Method 3 of 3: Importing Contacts

  1. 1 Open up Google Contacts and log into your google account. Enter your email address and password and then click "Login". You will be taken to the contact page of your account.
  2. 2 Click Import Contacts... ". This button is located on the left side panel and opens a window for selecting an import source.
  3. 3 Click Browse. This will open a window so you can select the contacts file that was created during export.
  4. 4 Select your contacts file and click the "Open" button. The file will appear in the import window.
  5. 5 Click Import. This will import the contacts from the file into your Google Contacts list.

Tips

  • Today, the restoration of contacts using mobile applications is not possible and must be done through the site.
  • Store your exported contacts file in a safe place such as an external hard drive.
  • If you update your contacts at a high frequency, export your contacts file regularly.

Warnings

  • Even using a custom period, Google only stores contact data for 30 days. You must perform the recovery procedure during this period or create a personal copy before they are permanently lost.
