Call it "hiding," "cleaning," or whatever you like. Many people prefer to see their car without unnecessary badges and stuck letters installed by the manufacturer or dealer.

Steps

  1. 1 Wash the surfaces around the icons you want to remove. If you need to wash your car, this is the right opportunity to do it.
  2. 2 Heat the badges with a hair dryer, checking the degree of heating by hand, as you cannot overheat the paint. If you are deleting letters or numbers, work with each one separately. Heat for 10-15 seconds, checking the degree of heat during this time.
  3. 3 Apply 3M glue remover to the badge while holding a rag underneath to prevent the cleaner from dripping below.
  4. 4 Heat again for 5-10 seconds while checking the heat level.
  5. 5 Use dental floss to “cut off” the icon. Pull the floss away from the machine so that it is in contact with the icon, not the machine. If the floss is difficult to cut through the adhesive, reheat and apply 3M. Ask a friend to help hold the badge so it doesn't fly away.
  6. 6 After removing the badge, you will need to remove any glue residue. Gently try to clean the corner - if it doesn't, reapply heat and 3M cleaner. Slowly scrape off any glue residue. Be careful not to scratch the paint.
  7. 7 Use a damp rag or towel to remove any dirt that was not previously removed when preparing the surface for work.
  8. 8 Step back and enjoy your work.

Tips

  • You might want to keep the badges and letters for yourself. You can always offer them to a friend who lost one letter.
  • Some people use dental floss, spatulas, and other tools to remove the glue.
  • Also, if you don't have 3M, you can use other glue removers, insect and tar removers, and the like - use whatever works best for you.
  • Estimated time: 15-20 minutes.
  • 3M Adhesive Cleaner also removes wax. If you want to wax your car body, this is the right time for that, or apply wax only to the surfaces you have worked with. Note how much easier it is to apply wax to a non-marking surface.

Warnings

  • You can scratch the clear surface of the paintwork if you use anything other than your nails to clean the glue residue. A Sonax paint cleaner (or light polish) and a microfiber cloth will help restore the finish to perfect condition.
  • On older cars, you may find differences in paint shades as the paint fades in the sun. Please compare the shades of paint on the door frame, under the hood and in the trunk with the color of the car body to see if the badges are worth removing.
  • You can damage your car if you do something wrong. Please use common sense.
