Ceiling fans wear out over time and must be removed for service. If your ceiling fan is making a lot of noise, it may have dried oil. Check oil level and lubricate bearings if necessary.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Checking the Oil

  1. 1 Check if your fan requires lubrication. Some models are not lubricated at all.
  2. 2 Find the instructions for your fan. Read the instructions for lubricating the fan. Learn how to check for grease.
  3. 3 Make sure the fan is de-energized. Climb a ladder to check the lubrication without removing the fan from the ceiling.
  4. 4 Insert the pipe cleaner into the oil check hole. Use a brush as a dipstick.
    • If the oil level is sufficient, additional lubrication will not solve the problem.
    • If you insert the dipstick all the way, but do not find any oil, you need to add it.
  5. 5 Buy machine oil or WD-40 spray.

Part 2 of 2: Fan Lubrication

  1. 1 Insert the Phillips bit into the cordless screwdriver. Don't forget the stepladder to access the fan.
  2. 2 Disconnect the fan blades, then remove the motor. You may need the help of a friend who will take the blades while standing at the bottom.
  3. 3 Place the motor on a table. Locate the bearings at the top and bottom of the motor.
  4. 4 Place the motor with the working side up. Place 3-4 drops in the top bearing. Rotate the motor by hand (about 10 full revolutions) so that the oil is well distributed in the bearing.
    • If you are using WD-40, spray the product directly into the bearing with a gentle pressure, then crank the motor.
  5. 5 Turn the motor over. Lubricate the lower bearing (where the blades are attached) with the same amount. Twist the bottom of the motor to distribute the grease to the bearing.
  6. 6 Connect the motor to the ceiling, starting with the wiring and ending with the screws.
  7. 7 Attach the blades one at a time. After installation, check the fan at low speed to ensure proper connection and balance.

Tips

  • It is recommended to check and lubricate the fan every time you reinstall it. The oil can leak out and dry out with any movement of the fan. Lubricate the fan immediately before reinstalling.
