This article will show you how to force restart a frozen iPhone, as well as how to factory reset iPhone by deleting all data and restoring backup to iCloud and iTunes.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Force Restart iPhone

1. 1 Check if iPhone can be turned off normally. It is recommended to force restart the iPhone only as a last resort, when the device is not responding, that is, it is frozen. To turn off your iPhone in the usual way, do the following:
   • Press and hold the power button until the “Move to turn off device” message appears on the screen. Move the slider to the right.
2. 2 Press and hold the button combination to reboot the device. If iPhone cannot be turned off in the usual way, press and hold the appropriate combination of buttons:
   • iPhone 6S and earlier: Power button + Home button.
   • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: power button + volume down button.
3. 3 Continue to hold both buttons. Hold them for 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen, and then release the buttons.

Method 2 of 3: Factory Reset via iPhone

1. 1 Open the Settings app. Its icon looks like a gray gear (⚙️), which is usually located on the main screen.
2. 2 Click on your Apple ID. It's a section at the top of the menu that contains your name and profile picture (if any).
   • If you're not signed in yet, click Sign In>, enter your Apple ID and password, and then click Sign In.
   • If your device is running an older version of iOS, you can skip this step.
3. 3 Click iCloud. This button is in the second section of the menu.
4. 4 Scroll down the screen and tap iCloud Backup. It's near the bottom of the Apps Using iCloud section.
   • Move the iCloud Backup slider to the On position (the slider turns green).
5. 5 Click Back Up Now. This button is at the bottom of the screen. Wait for the backup to complete.
   • To back up your iPhone, your device needs to be connected to a wireless network.
6. 6 Click iCloud. It's in the upper-left corner of the screen. You will be returned to the iCloud settings page.
7. 7 Click Apple ID. This button is located in the upper left corner of the screen. You will be returned to the Apple ID page.
   • If your device is running an older version of iOS, you can skip this step.
8. 8 Click Settings. It's in the upper-left corner of the screen.
9. 9 Scroll down the screen and tap General. It's near the top of the menu, next to the gear icon (⚙️).
10. 10 Scroll down the screen and tap Reset. It's near the bottom of the menu.
11. 11 Click Clear data and settings. It's near the top of the menu.
12. 12 Enter a code. Enter the code you use to unlock your phone.
    • If prompted, enter the Restrictions password.
13. 13 Click Reset iPhone. This will reset all settings and delete user data and media files.
14. 14 Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone. The iPhone will be reset to factory settings, so the device needs to be set up again (like new).
    • During device setup, the system will ask if you want to restore your smartphone from an iCloud backup. Agree to this offer if you want to restore your media, data and applications.

Method 3 of 3: Factory Reset Using iTunes

1. 1 Back up your data (if possible). We recommend that you back up your data in order to restore it after resetting your smartphone. You can create a backup in iTunes.
   • Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes if it doesn't launch automatically.
   • Click on your iPhone in the top row of icons.
   • Click "This PC" - "Create a backup". The backup will take a few minutes.
2. 2 In iTunes, click on your iPhone. Its icon is at the top of the window.
3. 3 Click Reset iPhone to reset your device. The system will ask you to confirm that you want to erase all data on your iPhone. The reset process will take about 15-20 minutes.
4. 4 Switch to recovery mode (if needed). If iPhone doesn't show up in iTunes, or is frozen, or you don't know the screen unlock code, you may have to go into device recovery mode.
   • Connect iPhone to your computer with a USB cable and make sure iTunes is running.
   • Follow the steps in the "Force restart your iPhone" section of this article.
   • Follow the instructions in the iTunes window to reset iPhone to factory settings. You will not be able to create a backup.
5. 5 Download the backup. When you reset your device, use iTunes to download the latest backup. Make sure iPhone is connected to your computer and highlighted in the iTunes window, then click Restore Backup and select the backup you want.
   • If you reset your iPhone because you don't know the unlock code, do not restore the backup, as this will restore the unlock code as well.Set up your iPhone again (like a new smartphone) and then sync the content you want to your device.
   • If you are setting up your iPhone again (like a new smartphone), the system will ask you to enter the Apple ID of the account that was previously associated with the iPhone. If you do not know this information, contact the previous owner of the smartphone and ask to unlink the device to the account of the previous owner on the page www.icloud.com/find.
